Nobel winner: Internet might have stopped Hitler:

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — The spread of information on the Internet has given the world a new tool to forestall conflicts, Nobel literature prize winner Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio said Sunday.

In his Nobel lecture to the Swedish Academy, the 68-year-old Frenchman said an earlier introduction of information technology could even have prevented World War II.
"Who knows, if the Internet had existed at the time, perhaps Hitler's criminal plot would not have succeeded — ridicule might have prevented it from ever seeing the light of day," he said.

It is coming my dear.

The government (ours, US and UK as much as do others like China) has a distaste for the availability to trade information quickly. Be it conspiracy theory or mere reality news, it frightens them.

China can get away with censoring the net because they have very limited connections to the internet backbone that they can control. That isn't true of any western nation. The net simply cannot be effectively controled without massive changes to the telecom infrastructure of the west which is impractical in the extreme.

It sure did not stop the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
So my guess is that if present at that time the internet would have been used to foment WWII.

Yes ok, buttttttttttttt, you also have to try to revert back to life there and then when even the 'decent' German citizens evetually became quite afraid and paranoid to even know who to trust even if they had a differing opinion to the current government.

Makes you wonder...if they had anonymous access to such a technology that could get the word spread quickly and again ANONYMOUSLY in nature, would it had of made a difference? Could it have?

Will it ever? Despite and ignore all conspiracy theories, imagine any governement out of the population's control...wouldn't the first and most likely means of communication be the first to go (even before a free press)????

at the current time the net is a good tool for learning what is going on.

there is a push to TV-ize it. so controlled that it talks at you, and not back and forth.

in crises tho- even a simple power outage will take down a portion of the net. alot can bump us off.

I save things Ild like to read later in case the web does go down. Tho with no power, Im with out. Unless I sit in the car and plug into the lighter.

As it is the net is a great tool....as for the computer itself within my lifetime the pc as we know it will become obsolete in favor of a "smart phone". As the technology for batteries gets better and they become stronger, smaller and take less time to charge even the power issue will fade a bit. I just hope they build a docking station with a screen big enough for us visually impaired types!...Technology can be a wonderful thing....as long as screens and fonts are big enough for me to read!

I think it is unlikely a government might want to shut down the internet, as it is the perfect surveillance tool.

Just look at it, all the forums and special interests on the net, all that truthful public oppinion.

Not forgetting the ability to lure in and trap potential criminals.

I wonders with this forthcoming UK law on holding 'obscene' images , I wonder if those that draughted these laws researched on the very forums we use, a whole load of potential criminals ready to expose. Who knows, they may have even logged our IP addresses already.

If a government shut down the internet, which it is perfectly capable of, given new laws on preventing terrorism, they effectively lose track of people.

Yes, exactly, Aneirin butttt, some theories are that even google, youtube etc are and can be used to backtrack someone's IP to see what they are searching and when and why. Some even fear (ok this is the goofiest page I could find on the subject lol: http://www.google-watch.org/bigbro.html ) that in the end, they will scoop up all the people viewing pages they find 'insecure' as a whole.
