A great place for your favorite holiday drink.  Here is the recipe for one of Mine:

Chocolate Martinis:

1 part Godiva liqueur
1 part light creme de cacao
1 part vanilla Stoli
1 part 1/2 and 1/2

Shake with ice; serve in glass garnished with chocolate syrup and a Hershey kiss; top with chocolate shavings.

Does anyone have an easy and delicious recipe for gluwein? I'm dying to make some, now that it's snowing and arctic.

This thread has a recipe for eggnog, though I modify it by using 1/2 the heavy cream and simplify the booze mix with just a bottle of bourbon and one of spiced rum . . . though this year I'm thinking of also dumping some Frangelico in it too.

That eggnog goes real good in my morning coffee!

Cocoa-

Here's my recipe

2/3rds cup of unsweetened cocoa (Scharffenberger is very nice) 1/3rd cup of sugar (some folks may prefer a half cup of sugar)- dash salt- couple ounces of water.  Heat over med. high for several minutes stirring constantly- it should be bubbling.  You should get a nice thick chocolate syrup.  You're polymerizing the sugar in this process which will make the cocoa thicker- I haven't found an instant cocoa/hot chocolate that stands up to this one.  Add a quart of milk.  Heat and stir constantly.  Get it hotter than you can comfortably drink.  Add a teaspoon of vanilla (or two.)

Pour 8 oz into a mug.  Add 1-2 oz of either: Crown Royal, Jameson's, or Appleton's Rum.  Do not use a smoky or peaty whisky.

Enjoy!

Sam

Mulled cider - using the non-alcoholic cider - yes , i know, i'm a light weight.
i tried scumpy in England and ewwww   -  bad stuff, man.

I throw cinnamon stick, whole allspice and cloves in cider and heat to hot, but not boiling.  Delicous, and makes the house smell fabulous!!!!

Punch spiked with rum is sure to please.

Had to do my bloody homework myself, since no slave was forthcoming with a gluhwein recipe (and where's Hippie, food connaisseur extraordinaire, when you need him?), and I think I might have nailed a winner:

For 12 people (yeah, right!):
1.5 liters red wine (cheap burgundy preferred)
1 cup Marc (apple brandy)
1 cup white sugar (more to taste)
6 sticks cinnamon
6 whole cloves
pinch allspice
pinch mace
1 orange
1 lemon (for the peel)

Add all ingredients except lemon peel to crock pot. Stir liquid and turn on crock pot. Grate peel from lemon. Cover and let sit 8-12 hours.

Apparently, the wine MUST NOT BOIL, or the alcohol will be gone (ya think?). And... we don't want that.

Hic. A votre santé, m'sieur dame.

Okay, original German Glühwein. However, the amounts are subject to change, according to your personal taste.

a bottle of redwine
a glass of orange juice
a cinnamon stick
3 cloves
a piece of star-anise
one cardamom seed
one allspice seed
peel of one orange (organic oranges)
peel of 1/2 lemon (organic)
brown sugar to taste

Put together into a pot, and slowly heat. Hold hot on the stove for about 30 min, do not cook.
Filter through a fine mesh sieve, serve.
You can also put all the spices and the peel into one of those small filter bags you can buy for the use with loose tea. Close with a piece of string and hang into the pot. No straining needed.
Additionally, those homemade spice bags make a nice Christmas gift in a box with a bottle of wine. You need to dry the peel for that, though.

You can make a delicious white Glühwein also. Substitute apple juice for the orange juice, use the peel of 1/2 an orange, no lemonpeel. Try honey instead of sugar in the white as well as in the red one.

If you want to spike it, rum and amaretto work nicely with the red, applebrandy with the white.

calamitysandra -> RE: Your Favorite Drinks for the Holiday (12/9/2008 3:07:54 PM)

I myself like the Glühwein too, especially the white one.
I am also partial to hot cocoa made with milk and not too much brown sugar, vanilla and spiked with a nice bit of Baileys.

This is great for summer get-togethers, but it's just fine for Christmas too --

Vodka Slush

7 c water
2 c sugar
4    green tea bags
1 can frozen orange juice
1 can frozen lemonade
1 - 2 cups Vodka

Boil the water and sugar. Use 2 boiling cups of water to make the green tea, let steep. Toss the tea bags and combine all ingredients. Freeze for 2-3 days (it needs that long to set up). Stir 2 or 3 times while it's freezing.

You may drink as is or scoop some in a glass and pour ginger ale or another clear soda over it.        Na sdrovia!!
