There will be much interest tomorrow regarding employee absence. In the spirit of 'A Day Without A Mexican', tomorrow is a 'Day Without A Gay' in California.
quote:

On December 10, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes.

On December 10, you are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in "gay"--and donate your time to service!

Has this gotten any publicity anywhere?

How many will be showing their solidarity?

Me? Well, I had a vacation day scheduled for Christmas shopping anyway, don't 'ya know! I mean just because I'm a big fan of 'Show-Tunes' and go to Folsom every year, you shouldn't make assumptions!

LOL....the first I heard about this ....but, it is a California thing. I certainly have a few design types that would be absent from my stores otherwise!

Goodness, there goes half my workforce!

Seriously, though, this is a wonderful idea.  I can't take the day off, but there's other ways to help.  I have my lunch hour free to write to some representatives, for example...

BUT I CAN'T CALL IN AT WORK ON 12/10 OR I'LL GET FIRED!

Me too, if only because it seems to be such a source of annoyance to other people  .

This is fantastic. I saw a bumper sticker once that said "If being gay is a disease, I'm calling queer to work." I think it's a great idea to actually do it!

This action has been mentioned a number of times on talk shows in the Philly area.  Personally, I think it's the wrong tact, taking a day off for a political event and possibly resulting in other workers taking up the slack or, in the case of some restaurants, maybe having to close because of the lack of service people.  Sure it might get attention, but at a time when people are losing jobs, not showing up for work because of sexual orientation doesn't seem to smart an idea to me.  Have a march on the weekends and the press would be there, and other people would not have their jobs impacted.  Bottom line, I doubt this will be a successful tactic today and it may fan the flames of resentment from many in the str8 community.

I heard that if you're worried about the exposure involved with calling in gay to work, you should go, but don't shop/spend any money :)

OMG! All gays wear makeup! If you wear makeup, you can fake gay! Hilarious!

I stand by the term douchey and it's use here.

No, it referred to getting a day off.
They are good for everyone, regardless of orientation.
I did not seek to encapsulate the gay experience in a one line joke.
Douchey? I know some bi fems with a sense of humour.

Sexual orientation has nothing to do with humour. Your 'joke' wasn't funny. But this isn't the place for this discussion. Since you thought it was worthwhile to send me a message, pretty much typing the exact same thing as you did here, let's keep it over email.
