China's strategy of soaking up US debt to sustain a market for its exports seems about to backfire in a huge way.

Status: offline 		Well, as a man who normally does a lot of importing, I will not risk the capitol on a container of things I may not be able to sell. 50% of the total must be paid up front and the other 50% needs to be paid when the container is half way here. It must be done by witre transfer so there is no lag to the funding. If I make a mistake now my stores could go under. I won't risk it and neither will most of the others I know in our industry.

Nor should you.

However, it is instructive, I think, to note that China's economic engine has been built not on domestic demand but on export demand--and that by fueling housing bubbles here and elsewhere, they created their own "export" bubble, the bursting of which is potentially more devastating than the bursting of the housing bubble is for the US.

It truely is junk!
And worse, most of it is toxic!
Many people here who I know are buying things from local artisans and craftpeople as gifts for Christmas.
Would you buy a toy for a child if you knew there was lead paint in it or benzene?

Status: offline 		I try to buy American whenever I can - unfortunately, there are tons of products that are simply no longer available as American made.

Status: offline 		If at all possible is the hard part of buying American....In my industry the domestic suppliers are so few and limited as to what they build. Worse yet, some of the things I can buy are only assembled in the USA from materials from China. I have one vendor in Indonesia and one in, of all places, Viet Nam... Sorry shape of the American manufacturing base rears it's forsaken head. I wish it were different, and maybe in time it will become so.

Does this cover American corporations that manufacture their products abroad or does it have to be 100% American? What if a foreign company employs American workers, would you buy their products if they were in direct competition with an American company that used overseas workers to manufacture their products?

We live in a world of multinationals, are you going to buy fuel from Exon mobile if Shell is cheaper? You'd be keeping just as many American's in work in either case or perhaps you are going to demand an audit of the workforce of every shoe corporation before buying a pair of shoes?

unless it's a car, or electronics, or a bunch of other stuff made better elsewhere because many of our our US manufacturers somehow felt that we would pay for shoddy workmanship in the name of patriotism.

Status: offline 		Walk through any store and you will find things that say made in America..the problem is most of the components come from Asia. even if you buy an American Made car or truck parts of it come from Canada, Mexico and Asia. It may have been assembled here, but the parts come from elsewhere. We are still shipping our steel and aluminum to China to be shaped/manufacturered into parts and shipped back because it is cheaper than doing it here.

One export that China has that may continue to ship is bamboo. It is increasingly being used here not just as a decorative plants, furniture and food product, but even in Sheets and clothing. However with the recent (past 2 years) contamination of food, jewelry and toy products with melamine, lead, GHB, and benzene around the world not just in America in Chinese Imports I suspect even without the collapse of Global economies China would have been hurting later if not sooner. The level of confidence in the products not being hazardous to health is extremely low, most especially since quite a few infants in China have died or developed potentially fatal health problems due to contamination of the milk with Melamine and that same contamination has been found in their manufactuered for Outside companies exported formula.

The biggest problem? Unless you are growing, slaughtering or buying from Farmers Markets, there is a good chance that some part of your food product is imported from China. The death of thousands of pets came from rice gluten imported for use in the pet food, the same rice gluten that is used in our foods as well.  Interestingly enough..the manufactuerer does not have to state on the package where fillers, gluten, etc comes from.

Made in America?

With contributions from the rest of the World.

That was a great post with great insight and critical information from a busniessman with a perspective that you would never find in the media.  Thank you.

Status: offline 		Poen, if it says "made in America" but is made from foreign subassemblies, the company is violating the law.  If it says "assembled in America" then you know that it is a foreign product put together over here.  The company I used to work for is the world's largest manufacturer of appliances and they couldn't even work around that law. 
Don't misunderstand me, I know exactly what you are saying.  Nearly everything is made somewhere else or "assembled" here.  Almost nothing is made in America.  That is why we have to support what is made here.  If we don't, it will all go away and our economy will finally die.  Right now, it can still be saved.  Following this same path for another ten years will make it terminal.

Status: offline 		The truth of the matter is China pay a wage that the job of factory assembly work deserves. People should be forced to expand themselves, American workers are capable of more and should aspire to greater things than working on a production line. Paying too high a price for production line work is holding people back because they feel safe, I'd hate for anyone to look back and think 'I spent most of my time at work and I should have done something that challenged me, what else was my life for?'
