I didn't even know we had a band association...learn something new every day.

And no CL, I really don't care.

Why is this news worthy?
Do I *need to know* whether someone is gay if I'm listening to their music?

Awesome.  Finally a president that realizes that there is, and recognizes the talent, service, and things of worth from other groups aside from just the typical republican nuclear families with 6+ figure incomes.  Too bad some other people a bit higher on the thread don't...  God forbid we actually have an inclusive leader finally.  I have to say, for the first time in a long time, I'm actually beginning to not feel ashamed to say "I live in the U.S."

OK, how is this a "political gesture?"
I thought being gay was a "sexual issue."
Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all hostile towards gays, I support gay marriage.
It would seem to me that if you wanted to be "inclusive" to gays you wouldn't want to be singling them out.
What if there's a few people in those groups who wish to maintain their privacy?
Why do people have a need to try to politicise everything?
I mean is that really neccessary?
And what if other groups feel excluded?
That "feel good" "political correctness crap never works.
If you were in one of those music groups would you want people applauding you because they liked your music or because they knew you were gay?

It's a band composed of gays and lesbians. Those in it aren't concerned about the closet or they wouldn't be in it.

Not everything but, as I go into below, things involving the inauguration simply *are* political.
quote:

I'm sure they will. That's another part of politics - trying to keep all the balls in the air.
quote:

I would want you, Popeye, to clap because you like my music. However, if I'm invited to play at the inauguration because I make great music and the President wants to make a political gesture I have no issue with that. 1) I know I must be good or I wouldn't make the cut and 2) I'd be pleased that the President is making that gesture.

And, blah, I'm not talking political correctness at all. That's bullshit.

But this is a political gesture. "Minority" groups are not chosen accidently. Everyone who will speak, march, sing, dance, play music, fart on cue has been looked at from all angles. It's a gesture of goodwill towards the gay community and, hopefully, a sign that he will keep gay issues in mind during his term.

Who the President entertains and is entertained by at public events such as this are never as simple as "he likes the music". You can regard that a shame but I regard this as much more noteworthy than if Suri Cruise is off her weird oatmeal shake yet though more Americans are probably interested in the latter.

OK, how is this a "political gesture?"
It's the contrast with the white anti-gay country-club party. (36 out of 2000-something delegates to the Republican convention were other than white. That speaks volumes.)

Why would you think gays have issues with sex?

SO do I.

I could be wrong, but I don't think one joins "The Gay Mens Chorus of Manhattan" to be in the closet.

Because human group behavior is political.

Like who? The KKK Marching Band?

Tell it to the people who were at Stonewall.

As long as they spelled my name right.

Because that particular bathroom will be booked up by Republican congressmen until then.

CL this may not be Newsworthy to you. You may not see it as anything more than a political ploy..but it is an advance when an openly gay group is invited to March and Play. Perhaps not as big a breakthrough as the first time brilliant coloratura soprano, Marie Selika (1878) or the Fisk Jubilee Singers (1882) (both Black) sang and played at the White House, but still a significant advance considering it has been a horrible year for Same Sex  rights to marry and adopt. Previously just because they are an openly gay band, they would have not have received an invite even if they rivaled Bond or the Philharmonic Orchestra in ability and fame.

It may one day lead to other oppressed groups gaining some rights...like those who practice BDSM being recognized as a sexual orientation instead of being lumped in with Sex Offenders, Prostitution and Domestic Violence. Frankly I find it far more newsworthy than the latest Movie star busted for DUI.
