Climate change experts 'lose faith' in renewable technology

Guess "green" isn't so "green".....

I think they're making more progress on solar energy every year.
Personally I was thinking about a few ways to get electrical power from the ocean.
Maybe I should patent them?

OK- I'll bite-

If you read the article with a bit of a critical eye- one question that popped into my head was the relatively small drop off in the predicted utility of the technologies due to lack of technical progress or does it reflect the economic climate which is vastly changed from a year ago?  Since the drop off in optimism seemed to be evenly spread across all technologies (including nuclear)- I think this more accurately reflects funding drying up for new capital intensive projects and cancellations of existing projects- currently happening in this country with ethanol plants.

Popeye-I suspect you'll find that trying to get power out of the oceans has been patented and there are a variety of technologies under development.  I don't hold much hope out for any of them- salt water's a really tough environment- and ocean waves have orders of magnitude larger energy changes than wind with increasing velocity.

There is an important report coming out of the Senate this week on the "myth" of global warming citing 650 scientists worldwide questioning the United Nations report.  The UN report was written by 25 scientists and has influenced opinion of the greenies in this country to the maximum.  Going to make for interesting reading and among the 650 scientists joining against the UN report are world recognized Lauretes, some of whom had originally been on the other side of the fence.

A recent news story focused on a very simple and non-glamorous substance being processed into biodiesel, algae.

Vendaval

They've been working on that one for a while.  It's a useful technology when coupled with something like a sewage treatment plant, but it turns out that it takes an enormous volume of water, energy and processing equipment.  Basically the algae when grown without external inputs are way too dilute so that you use an enormous amount of energy filtering the water to collect them.  It's not a significant part of an energy solution, but it can be useful.

Hey, I happen to like various forms of algae, like the seaweed salad at the local sushi restaurants.

I see your 650 scientists on the petroleum payroll, and raise you 10 times as many reputable ones who are climatologists, NASA weather satillite experts, geologists, planetary computer modelers, ice cap researchers.....

MarsBonfire, it is helpful to mark your posts with "General Reply" or "Fast Reply" to avoid confusion to other people in the thread if not responding directly to the person above your post.

Sambo, that's correct.

My friend...thou hast been "scammed" by Albert Gore...., the brilliant inventor of the internet and "Climate Scientist" in more recent years.
The people questioning the "theory" of global warming include some of the most notable climatologists on the planet.  By the way, we had "snow" in New Orleans, Europe is having a record snowfall, and the arctic ice pack is growing.....all signs of "Global Warming" I would guess... LOL  gimme a break!

Yes, whenever an article like this crosses my path, my first thought is: You have to prove to me that global warming is a reality, first. This summer, our average temp was DOWN by almost ten degrees (That included almost three straight weeks of temps hovering around 100 F [That's about 21C for our friends on the other side of the pond]).

Hole in the ozone layer? Ever stopped to think that maybe it has always been there as an "excape valve" to allow all the harmful crap out of our atmosphere and we only recently discovered it?

Yes, there will be seasonal and yearly variations in temperature.  That doesn't mean the average temperature, measured over the entire earth over many years, isn't going steadily up, and at an increasing rate.  You can't say "it was pretty chilly yesterday!" as evidence.

Sorry, but this clearly shows that you haven't been doing your reading.  :(
