FR:  Thought one:   Actually, I didn't see any evidence of robotic decision making.  If all he did  was program set responses to a specific question, then she's nothing more than a fancy voice-activated tape loop.  For instance, when he says "Aiko, lick my feet" and she responds "No, I am not your personal slave" what you want to see is what happens when he says "Aiko, lick my envelope" and then "Aiko, tickle my feet" and then "Aiko, lick your feet" etc.   A decision-making robot would understand each statement and reply appropriately.  All I see is a rote response.

Thought two:  $25,000 for a "woman" who won't let you touch her and doesn't perform desired sex acts?  Heck, I thought all you had to do to get that was marry one....

Bah dum bum!  I'll be here til Thursday folks.  Tip your waitresses!

E.

I think its amazing if he had the ability to make a robot that is so functional.   But the sex part is just strange and I don't believe for a second that it can cook, clean and take care of the household.  I think its got to be a bs story

It can't yet. It cannot walk.

If a female robot falls in the forest ..............does it still nag?

Padriag -> RE: Stepford wife (12/12/2008 12:45:41 PM)

There are some programs you can get that can learn and can form their own responses.  Such as this one...

http://www.zabaware.com/webhal/index.html

These programs store responses, but also cross index them.  This allows them to begin associating things so that over time and with practice they begin to be able to have conversations.  Do they actually have original thoughts... no, I don't think so.  But then again, neither do a lot of humans.  LOL

Anyway, if he used a similar program for his robot's conversational ability, it would be able to carry on at least a limited conversation that would consist of more than simple pre-programmed responses.

Oddly enough we Humans use the same method in learning to speak and construct sentences and complete thoughts. It is also the method they are using to teach AI programs. Has he perfected things yet? No. But frankly he has done a lot more than most could have without a lab at MIT or one of the Universities or Corporations. I suspect with funding he could go a LOT furhter and he will likely get it.

I don't think so, a pocket or cellphone calculator has more technology...hell they even making recordable greeting cards.

Hollywood can do a better job with the human characteristic facsimile.

I think maybe the fact that it makes it seem that a lonely guy's blowup doll needs an upgrade is his angle.  As long as he can sleep better at night, I know I certainly can (his dolly keeps him busy at home).

So you don't believe this guy is some comic-book style genius who can build wonders in his own garage, advancing decades ahead of all other established robotics science?

jlf1961 -> RE: Stepford wife (12/13/2008 6:21:45 AM)

While it is possible that he may have created the robot and actually programed it with certain abilities, if he thinks he can actually perfect it within the next few years, with investor help, he needs a reality check.

Azimo, the robot developed by Honda took over a billion dollars and years to get it to the point it is at now, which is far from self initiating, which is the sign of true AI.

That being said, and without actually seeing any details on the system's capability, there are some distinct possibilities.

If he has actually made some jump in both tactile sensors and the ability to respond accordingly, then he may actually find that the leading research and development teams in the robotics and prosthetic industries will beat a path to his door.

And as someone pointed out, he may very well be on his way to creating a service robot, and if I may point out, some of the biggest leaps in technology have come from garages.
