This is one of those way-out there almost science-fiction too true to be real stories.  Archeologists in Britain found a 2,000 + year old skull that still has the brain inside as revealed by a scan at a nearby hospital.  How cool is that!  (OK, I am geeking again, big surprise, huh?...lol....)

"Scientists find 2,000 year old brain in Britain"

By RAPHAEL G. SATTER, Associated Press Writer Raphael G. Satter, Associated Press Writer – 15 mins ago
"Finds officer Rachel Cubbitt realized the skull might contain a brain when she felt something move inside the cranium as she was cleaning it, Hall said. She looked through the skull's base and spotted an unusual yellow substance inside. Scans at York Hospital confirmed the presence of brain tissue.

Hall said it was unclear just how much of the brain had survived, saying the tissue had apparently contracted over the years. Parts of the brain have been tentatively identified, but more research was needed, he said.

He said it was a mystery why the skull was buried separately from its body, suggesting human sacrifice and ritual burial as possible explanations."

In an unrelated story, Labour government ministers were yesterday grieving the loss of a dissident party member who was last seen on a train heading for York and whose body was recently discovered. A spokesman said "we utterly deny the notion that our comrade was hacked to death in the north of England last year on government orders and that anti-terror police did not shout a warning of what was about to happen to him".

Meanwhile UK charity Helping The Aged refused to confirm or deny reports that they had been working with several government ministers over recent years to support them as senility took hold; "the brains of Labour members are indeed sufficiently degenerated that they might appear to be two thousand years old" said Professor Alzheimer, head of government relations "but this can be misleading since most ministers in the current cabinet only have a developmental age of about 9. 10 tops."

The thing is, Uk 2k ears ago was a civilised place, more or less, perhaps not so civilised in our understanding given that reference was made to possible sacrifice, but civilised for the time. The last bog body that was found, Pete Marsh was found to not be of the peasant class, possibly nobility or even druidry. The people 2k years ago were an advanced race, a race that was responsible for many of the processes we use today, perhaps they were innovative, something which seems lacking in this day and age.

Oh God, there we go again... no offence meant, Aneirin, but this is absolute bollocks.

PH how is a two thousand year old dried up nut of a brain going to cure anything? It's just well preserved.

I would agree KS, though I would also have to admit to not having lived at that time despite my appearance.

I would expect society in Britain 2000 years ago to be more organised as to a rigid hierarchy that was overtly maintained. From that one could say it was more civilised in that it was more ordered.

However I would find it incredible to believe that life at that time would be anything like advanced except by comparison to bronze age culture perhaps, and advanced only in terms of its technologies - which with the arrival of the Romans at about this time was made redundant, along with much of the rigid hierarchy, at a stroke. Life pre the Romans would have been short, brutal, disease ridden, subject to famine and easily incurred mortality, superstitious and precarious. Life with the Romans in charge would not have changed much if at all from these conditions and indeed whatever new cultures arrived life was the same until the late 19th century in these relations.

Despite their considerable cultural prejudices, the Romans would not have supplanted British iron age culture if the latter had been advanced - the Romans given their considerable opportunism would have adopted such advances and they would have been passed down to us today through the same mechanisms as much else has come to us - through the Islamic world.

Well done for giving reference to the Islamic world, for they have been short changed through history, many things we thought European in inventure were originally Islamic , but brought via trade to Europe. Even our numeral system is Arabic in origin, it adjusted for our needs by the Italian scholar Fibonacci.

To right the wrongs, see here ;

http://www.1001inventions.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=main.viewSection&intSectionID=240

In reality, us and the Islamic world are not that different after all.

Much of what the Islamics gave us is actually Roman and Greek that had been present all over much of Europe until the western Empire disintegrated - even then only what remained after the Christian lunatics had destroyed much of what had been discovered over several centuries by the Greeks and Romans.

We in Europe are about a thousand years behind where we ought to be, because of the lunacy of those early Christians. We are only where we are now because the Muslims preserved so much and it filtered back this way a few centuries ago. It is a tragedy for Islam in so many ways that they abandoned it all and now find themselves much where we ought to be had we not gained that knowledge back from them.

Maybe it is that a society can only hold greatness for a limited period of time, for there has been many great civilisations through history, civilisations which would hold our own civilisation to shame in contrast. Maybe it is civilisation is like the age of man, a warring aggressive state followed by a content and learned state followed by apathy, let everything to shit state.

I have researched extensively into the Islamic history and found much of wonder and by it I do understand where the Western dislike for Islam has come from, much of it was created by the church in the early middle ages, they projected  their darkness onto islam, something which to a large extent lasts to this day, basically nonsense, crap generated by those with political ambitions.

The question is, can our present society be equal, greater or lesser than the great civilisations of the past, what are the parameters of great, and do we comply.

My personal belief is that 2k years of 'organised' christianity has actually stunted our growth as a society, when you consider at one time scientists were executed by the church as heretics. One reason why I dislike organised religion, they seek to control.

Decline seems to come from outside by way of other peoples' aggression, or from inside by way of the withering of the unity and identity of a culture/state, and with it the military spirit (which isnt going to be a popular thing to say).

We are just about in the second state I'd say. Ripe for an outside aggressor to come in and benefit from our parlous state of affairs - whether militarily or economically is not important to the ends. What's odd is that all the liberal, enlightened values that we'd like to see and which we've taken centuries to evolve, are the very means of our undermining.

Whats perplexing is that all this agrees very much with the stance of one Adolf Hitler on the subject.

I think much of our population are in the apathetic state, let shit happen, the learned bit seems to have passed away, many of our great brains move abroad where the funding is. I think if someone, or some other country came here and took over our country but still allowed it to be called Britain, no one would give a fuck, as long as the standard of living was maintained or made better. Maybe this country needs a takeover, foreign brains running it, much like what happens to companies that are static when a foreign investor gets involved.

I remember years ago, a brain in the UK developed a rival to the space shuttle, a machine that did not need a pilot or human crew, but could take off from a runway on jet engines, but when high enough those engines converted to rocket engines so it could go outside the atmosphere. HOTOL it was called, I remember the interest in it, then the lack of funding, then the sale to Japan. Brown wants brains for the future, there is no point in brains given the mentality of this country, if it is good, sell it off, brains don't want their inventions sold off, but want to develop them.

Ah hah! I keep thinking of an old black and white sci-fi movie, late 1950's or so, that had brain in a tank with a bunch of hoses attached and bubble gurgling in the water.  The brain was evil and was plotting all sorts of deaths and tragedies.  Anyone remember how the brain communicated or the name of this movie?

I've actually googled for further information and found it's the remains of Cedric The Nutter. Cedric was the Roads Minister in Julius Caesar's Labour government who introduced the Road Straightening Tax and also that all chariots had to use the left hand side of the road.

I'm almost sure that it wasn't that of Conservative Pleasures Minister Albert the Abstainer who introduced licensing laws and price controls on bread, which not only pissed off the Romans but a lot of Christians too who had difficulties thereafter finding enough for a bottle of Chianti and a loaf of Hovis bread.
