Christinestill -> Car Credit Score? (12/13/2008 11:42:01 AM)

i haven't had a credit card in several years.  i'm going to need to rent a car next week and it's proving difficult to do that without a credit card.  the car rental company said i could rent a car with my debit card but my "car credit score" must be 99 or above.

i've got decent credit but i can't find any info on what a car credit score is.  does anyone know what this is?

I don't know the answer to the question, but I've rented cars using my debit card because it has a mastercard logo on it and transactions clear through their network. Dunno if your debit card is the same, but that may simplify things.

Definitely check with the rental company, and get names. I've had that exact same situation...made my reservation online with a debit card, showed up at the rental counter, and been told I needed to put down a cash deposit or get a co-signer (who had an actual credit card).

Christine it is possible, this article has a chart at the bottom with the major car rental agencies policies on debit card rentals.  I would call and get a direct answer from the agent where you are renting and get their name, first and last.

Good luck[:)]

Christine you may also be able to get a letter of assurance faxed to you and the car rental company with the Credit Card companies information and statement that a physical card is in route, but the account is active. Speak to a supervisor about that as they are the ones who can authorize it. This is similar to the credit sheet you get when you are approved for a Home Depot or Lowes card authorizing you to make purchases while the card is produced and mailed. You will have to show several forms of ID to use it, but, it may make things easier.

No idea about a car credit score.  Though I've rented with my debit card in the past.
Car companies have told me they were going to take out a deposit of sorts, until the car was safely returned.

Sort of like a 2 or 300 dollar hold.

Yeah, when I've rented with my debit card they put a 300 dollar hold on it to make sure the money was paid or some crap.
