My wardrobe collection is mostly leather.  I recently acquired 'vinyl' as I was experimenting and didnt feel the need to spend $$$ without first understanding how the material influences the sizing.

I'm trying to determine the difference between Vinyl, PVC, rubber and latex. My theory relative to vinyl is that it's a less expensive cousin and I may even be wrong on that.

I've been all over the the internet trying to find explanations. I'm cross-eyed from searching the CM message archives.  Are the terms interchangeable? Help !

PVC is poly vinyl cloride.  so pvc=vinyl.  latex is rubber, although sometimes people call silicone rubber.  so those two terms are interchangable, too.

make sure you warn people what you're wearing if you do the latex/rubber...allergies suck.

there is major difference in textiles   pvc dose not streach like latex does latex  when it says natural comes from trees and the process of how it is made is very different then gummi rubber  the smell is way different  something you will have to experiment
latex rubber from the old days was made different then what it is today  pvc you can be a little more carefree with  latex you must keep in a cool dark place and dry and powdered plastic is not as clingy as latex and light had a scent that  different
have fun experimenting

and random note here. NEVER STORE VINYL NEXT TO LEATHER.

The vinyl color will rub off on the leather. And you can never get it out.

Latex is just nasty, especially the powdered latex, which can cause problems with respiratory and even when ingested. Mild to severe irritant.
Another is glycerol based lubricants. (but that is another subject)

I have to totally disagree. Latex is fantastic. It molds to the body like a second skin and its sexy! It is comes in a wide array of fashions from stylish dress to very kinky bondage gear.

Here is a well known latex supplier out of England. They also have PVC. I have bound about 75% of my collection from them. Look at the care of latex page for the do's and don'ts with latex.

Girl was speaking from personal experiences with latex, can not come into contact with it. Open cuts become infected by trace latex within the talc that keeps latex from sticking to itself. Breathing is hampered and swallowing becomes difficult. Girl avoids latex like a plague.
Go to hospital, they ask about allergies and they go searching for rubber gloves when girl tells them.
Glycerol-based ointments are another one. Girl breaks out in hives.

OK - PVC - comes in lots of different weights/qualities. To a large extent you get what you pay for. Generally PVC stuff is easier to make than latex, since it can be machines like normal (if heavy) fabrics, so tends to be cheaper and it tends to be easier to care for - much is inherently shiny and can just be rinsed/wiped down after wearing.

If you DON'T have allergies, Latex can be much more figure hugging, because if its stretch - so it can look stunning, but is totally unforgiving on the figure! Latex needs to be shone when you've put it on, and stored carefully between outings - so it's a hobby in itself! But I just love the look, feel, smell (on me or others :). Loads of good websites on the care and maintenance of latex clothing. Look for stuff that's "glued not molded" and generally thicker is more wearable/likely to last.

Allergic to latex, get a rash.  It sucks. But haveing breathing difficulties is worse - anaphylactic shock and all that.

People may use the terms interchangeably, but they really shouldn't. Silicone is an entirely different substance than latex rubber, with very different properties. For that matter, the term "vinyl" encompasses a number of materials including the typical fabric-backed PVC garment material (for example, I've seen clothing made from clear vinyl shower curtain material).

Latex can make beautiful sexy clothing, but it's very high-maintenance; easily ripped, susceptible to UV deterioration, breakdown from many common oil-based substances, and prone to picking up colors and smells from whatever it is in contact with. However, it is extremely stretchy, which combined with its shinyness (when polished) makes it a great fetish look.
