stella41b -> The Seasonal Hangover Cure and Prevention Thread (12/15/2008 3:58:53 PM)

Just thought I would start a thread for those people who in the coming weeks might have one too many (glass, bottle, can, whatever), get a bit sozzled and wake up with a hangover..

But how do you prevent a hangover (besides not drinking too much)? And what do you do when you have one?

My advice to anyone who knows they're going to be drinking is to drink plenty of bottled water beforehand.

Shifting a hangover?

Some people claim that drinking sour milk helps.

My advice would be to drink the juice left over from sauerkraut.

Also a small bit of bay leaf wedged between upper gum and upper lip absorbs that smell of alcohol on your breath (just in case you need to go back to the office after lunch).

What advice do you have to offer?

Don't drink two bottles of white wine while icing Christmas cookies, and then have a bottle of wine, and then drunk dial the guy whom you are playing with and tease him because he cannot get you.

That is a bad idea.  But, I guess my advice runs more on the prevention spectrum.

I am not sure that I could have found the phone after bottle number 3.  I am impressed!

i like to err on the side of prevention.  for every alcoholic beverage, drink an 8 ounce glass of water.

My cure which works is chocolate. Chocolate milk works best though a couple chocolate bars does the trick too!

5 Hour Energy drink, room temp bottled water, and Aleve have always helped me.  That and avoiding alcoholic drinks with high sugar contents.

Eat well before you drink - pasta, rice or potatoes.

Try and have a bottle of water every few drinks.

Pint of water before you go to bed (with a painkiller if you have gone OTT)

Hangover cure:

A good mix of protein, carbs and fat - a fry up ( I do 2 versions - a meat one and a veggie one)
(my veggie version is a fried (free range) egg, some veggie sausages and veggie bacon, fried mushroom and tomatoe, baked beans with 2 rounds of toast and lots of liquid (I prefer hot water with a slice of lemon. For some reason coffee when hungover makes me ill.

Happy Hangover Season People

My hangover cure, used by college students worldwide, (we've got to be good for SOMETHING right?) is Waffle House, or Taco Bell.

Greasy, nasty food surprisingly gets rid of the hangover pretty quickly.

one time, dunno why, but cotton candy seemed to cure the most vicious vodka hangover EVER

After a night of tossing back 4-5 Dr. Kevorkians, I cured my hangover with a ham sandwich.[:D]

Back when I did still occasionally overindulge, my next morning's breakfast was Coke and dry toast. The bubbles and sugar of the Coke helped the stomach, the caffeine helps the headache. And dry toast was all I could ever handle.

sirsholly -> RE: The Seasonal Hangover Cure and Prevention Thread (12/16/2008 2:28:20 AM)

another drink.

Aileen1968 -> RE: The Seasonal Hangover Cure and Prevention Thread (12/16/2008 4:30:46 AM)

A big, greasy fried Taylor Ham and melted cheese sandwhich.  Smothered in ketchup.  Eaten right before you pass out.  And then puking in the toilet is highly effective too.

Don't drink, or stay drunk!

I'm hardly in a position to offer advice, having never had a hangover.
I've administered two pints of the Red Cross's rehydration recipe with enough chocolate bars to counteract an insulin overdose after a mate had drank twelve bottles of Dog and then Guinness on top!  It did the trick though.

Recipe available upon request.

kittinSol -> RE: The Seasonal Hangover Cure and Prevention Thread (12/16/2008 5:40:50 AM)

Back in those days, I discovered that hot and spicyTom Kha soup (Thai chicken soup with galangal and coconut) would make me sweat out the surplus in a few minutes. Pure magic.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: The Seasonal Hangover Cure and Prevention Thread (12/16/2008 5:44:44 AM)

I find bourbon being my miracle. I get drunk, act like a sex fiend, can barely remember, but the hangovers are very mild. Slight headache and dehydration that is easily overcome with coffee and water. Eggs overeasy with runny yolks and toast helps too.

they dont call me Lushy for nuttin, yanno.

Edited to add: stay away from sweet drinks. I drink mine straight(bourbon) with a diet coke on the side. Another helpful thing that works is to have a glass of water for every alcoholic drink. Most of the hangover including headache is dehydration.

A friend of mine swears by B6 and B12.  I can recall her handing out vitamins to everyone before the partying started.

OMG Aileen, we can't get Taylor Ham here and right now my mouth is watering!!!

I agree with the water suggestion. I always have a glass of water along with my drinks and after a few sips of alcohol I take a good swig of water. I also only drink top shelf liquor and that REALLY helps.

A word of caution to the pain killer crowd. NEVER take Tylenol or any acetominophen while drinking...or even the next morning. You can literally kill your liver mixing a couple Tylenol and alcohol. I found this out when a girlfriend of mine took a couple Tylenol with a glass of red wine at dinner with her husband. She ended up in the hospital that night and nearly died.
