It was getting to the point where I couldn't afford the up keep of my doggies bills and trying to take care of his many medical needs was sinking me financially, and after taking care of his needs I had no money or means to take care of my needs, He probably set me back I'd say about 6 to 8 thousand dollars, in the year or two his health needed looking at, what with most vet bills totaly 500 dollars a pop for tests and more tests on top of those tests, and the normal office visit fee ect ect.

And though losing him hurt a whole lot, and I'd NEVER  wish to loose him I am relieved I won't have costly bills I can't afford.

It tore me up to admit to the vet when he needed so much I couldn't afford his care. I always felt like they were thinking yeah right you prick, or then why do you have the dog in the first place, or some other unkindly thought.

I also never went anywhere long term he couldn't come and that meant mini vacations too. especially as he was older, cause I was afraid I'd come home to a dead animal.  My neighbor had that happen, and it was devastating. Only her animal was cremated by the family friend before she could get home because the family friend had made the decision not to wait for Lori to get home before having the ill doggie put to sleep..  The odd thing was a week before he was perfectly fine, seemingly so at least, then in a matter of days he became very sick and the vet said he was dying of an auto immune difficiency and the kindest thing to do was to put him to sleep. There was no tell tale warning signs.

On some hands I feel I should feel awful for feeling relieved of no longer having an animal to be responsible for, but on other hands I feel it's a valid emotion.

Have you ever felt that way?

The vet isn't going to look at you badly. Many people in this country have no medical insurance, most of us have no pet medical insurance either. This is an issue that vets face every day.

Thankfully my dog went from well to beyond hope within 10 days, so this isn't something I had to face. My sympathies are with you.

DesFip, I had a week to think maybe something wasn't right. My dad kept saying poor old dog, he's obviously not gonna last to much longer on this earth, and I just tried to shrug it off and say no, no, he's fine I hope it's just old age. And then one day he looked so horrible and sick and he couldn't stand and he was falling over and he showed no sparks of life, when I picked him up or hugged him or held him,  I knew, there was no hoping it's just old age, specially not when I called the vet to ask about him and how pale his gums were. and she said he'd better come in today and if they can't see him today, well he'd better go to the ER.

Thank you for your condolances.

We haven't lost a pet recently, but one of our beloved cats, a Persian, passed away about 18 months ago. He went as he was laying on the couch right next to my partner. Most vets don't go to vet school to get rich, they do it out of a love for animals. They want to see pets remain as healthy as possible, but sometimes putting a much loved pet to sleep is the biggest act of kindness, as well as one of the hardest decisions we have to make as pet owners. My dad put his Lab down right before Thanksgiving. That dog was just like one of his kids as we're all grown up and out of the house now. As far your question, yhma, I have always felt relieved after putting a pet down as I feel I ended whatever suffering said pet may have been going through. I know how hard and painful a decision it can be, and I'll also freely admit, I cried like a baby when the Persian cat passed away. I still get teary eyed to this day, just remembering him.

I didn't go through the same thing you went through, but I had a cat for close to 20 yrs and he did have some health issues and needed surgery (but it wasn't at the end of his life. It was maybe half way through).  He recovered nicely and lived the rest of his life without health issues.  I'd say I spent probably upwards of about 4 thousand on him for vet bills when he was ill.  In the end of his life, he just died very quickly so I didn't have to deal with any vet bills at that point.

He died about 4 yrs ago and I still miss him terribly and still cry whenever I think about him, but I wouldn't do it again.  I don't plan on getting another pet, and part of the reason is exactly what you are going through.  I really can't afford to drop thousands of dollars on a pet, and I know if I had one, I would sooner clean out my bank account to get it well, than to let it die.  So, I know better not to get another pet.

Don't feel guilty.  You gave the dog a very good life and very good care right up until the end.  What more could you have done?   You went through something that was draining both financially and emotionally.  And there's no shame in feeling relieved that it's over, especially because the animal isn't suffering anymore either.

Mostly I felt relieved that my dog wasn't in pain anymore but yes, the financial burden can be heavy with a sick pet.
I am sorry YHMA about your pet, I know how it feels. Mickey is still missed by me every single day.

Thank you marie2. My parents thought I was absolutely stupid and daft to spend that much on him, but then again I have different views on pet ownership than I do. I feel you don't just feed and water them and give them a home, you take care of them above and beyond what's adaquit. And that means seeing to every medical need they may have, and My instinct to take him has always payed off, even when people were pooh poohing my concern and telling me to leave him alone he's fine.

My dad cried too and he was supprised I mean he knew he loved the dog, hell it lived with us and was part of us for so long, but he wasn't prepared for the depth of the feelings.

I'm not ashamed to say I cried like a baby either, and in front of the vet too lol.

I've lost pets to old age, as well as had to put them to sleep.  Either way, it's never easy.  The only relief is knowing they aren't suffering any more.  You have my sympathies.

Even more morbid, I felt that way when my mother died.  Just glad her suffering and illnesses were finally over.

I always did commend you for taking such good care of that dog :)

I don't think that's morbid windchymes.
