Oh Slaveboy, I love Gordon Lightfoot. Wreck of the Edmud Fitzgerald is such a great song. I think I have always loved the singer/songwriter genre too. The first grown up singer I can really remember liking was Janis Joplin. I had a major stoner babysitter that turned me on to  some great music. Her name was Bridget and we used to paint our toenails and play records for hours and she would smoke pot while my square as hell parents were out. [:)] She was a cool chick! I also loved loved loved listening to Etta James and  Rod Stewart. When I first heard Maggie May I was hooked. Still am.

I remember my dad listening to Gordon Lightfoot on the 8-track in our car as a very young child.  "Sundown" and "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"  stick out in my memory the most.  I still like Gordon Lightfoot; he's a great singer and songwriter.

My mom was a Bee Gees and Abba fan.  As dorky as it is, I like this Bee Gees song.  and I like a couple of Abba songs especially Waterloo

I remember all of those songs from a very young age.  About the only other song that I remember better from that age is this one:

There were a few songs growing up that find me reminiscing about the not so many good things that happened in my childhood and these are them
Monkees

Janis Joplin

it helps me remember some very old friends: Laurie, Karen, Janice, Steve, Jimmy

Simon & Garfunkel, The Beatles, The Stones, The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Heart and Blondie were all early listening material for me.  I cannot pin it down to just one artist or song, would listen to the radio and sing along in my bedroom or in the shower.

The Beatles.  My mother used to have the records playing all the time.  I was under the age of five when I used to sit on the couch and rock back and forth while I listened.  For some reason Hey Jude sticks in my mind the most from those days.

My earliest childhood memories go back to the Drumchapel estate in Glasgow and the Beatles singing Hey Jude, Manfred Mann singing The Mighty Quinn and The Troggs singing Wild Thing.

I was brought up at the time by my grandparents and my grandmother subjected me also to Engelbert Humperdinck and this by Harry Lauder.

TheHeretic -> RE: Reminiscing about music (12/16/2008 10:50:30 PM)

I am told that I required babysitters to play this song over and over again.  It's better than Barney...

NuevaVida -> RE: Reminiscing about music (12/16/2008 11:17:45 PM)

My very first "real" (not kids) record was Rubber Soul by the Beatles.  My grandmother bought it for me!  "I've just seen a face" grabbed me because of it's upbeat nature, and I immediately set out to memorize all the words.

Heart and Carole King were big in our house, too, since my oldest sister loved them and I came to, too.  Pink Floyd  was another regularly played group (oldest brother).

Bob Frickin Seger! My dad would play every tape he had of the man when we went fishing. I still love Bob.
And my best music memory from being a kid was when I went hunting for the first time and that stones song "paint it black" was on.
funny thing is, I listen to more classic rock now than much anything else. thanks dad!

It was Donny Osmond for me, too, lol.  Only it was his first hit, "Sweet and Innocent" that got me all goosebumpy at 13.  The one you're talking about was one of his later albums....after his voice changed.[:(]

Dance with me girl. I performed it in the living room. I dreamed I was on stage with Donny!

ELton John, yellow brick road album was the bomb!

I remember when rock was young
Me and Suzie had so much fun
holding hands and skimming stones
Had an old gold Chevy and a place of my own
But the biggest kick I ever got
was doing a thing called the Crocodile Rock
While the other kids were Rocking Round the Clock
we were hopping and bopping to the Crocodile Rock

Well Crocodile Rocking is something shocking
when your feet just can't keep still
I never knew me a better time and I guess I never will
Oh Lawdy mama those Friday nights
when Suzie wore her dresses tight
and the Crocodile Rocking was out of sight

But the years went by and the rock just died
Suzie went and left us for some foreign guy
Long nights crying by the record machine
dreaming of my Chevy and my old blue jeans
But they'll never kill the thrills we've got
burning up to the Crocodile Rock
Learning fast as the weeks went past
we really thought the Crocodile Rock would last

Awww... lushy ya are all uncultured[;)]they are classic!  I used to laugh sooo hard at cinderellarockafella.  My gran would dance around the room with me in her arms yoddling and being silly so it always brings me warm fuzzies.  We would spin round and round until we fell down all dizzy into her big squishy chair and she always used to say, 'No matter how old and wrinkly you get little angel, remember to be silly sometimes'.

She was always full of good things.

Oh, and I adore Johnnie Ray even today.  I love this songs sentiment, it was such a cool thing back then for a man to sing.  Regardless of the content of the song though, even if I do believethey rock, it's the memories they invoke when they are played.  My gran was the most fabulous and amazing women ever, and sitting listening to Ray makes me think of warm winter sundays with the smell of roast beef wafting from the kitchen and my mum singing at the top of her voice, my dad in his chair reading the sunday papers complete with pipe.  I wouldn't trade them for the world.

Ah yes, Pink Floyd brings back memories.  I spent most of one summer in high school listening to Dark Side of the Moon.

My gramma was the same with Lawrence Welk. So I get it. I really do. My grandma use to cook and tap dance at the same time!
