I actually DID see a college student answer a question about where in the Lascaux caves we would find paintings with: "on the inside." Another student, on a multiple choice question asking about why the discovery of the Rosetta Stone was important, chose: "this type of stone was much easier to carve than earlier types of stone, and so revolutionized the history of sculpture." A third student, concerned about the environment, wrote an essay about why we should ban "arousal" sprays. But my favorite is the student writing about Shelley's poem "Ozymandias," about a fallen monument in a desert: "Ozymandias was once a great king, and when he was fully erect, he was a force to be reckoned with. But now he's laying pieces about the desert."
