Actually, they are--sales are way down.

Not AS bad a problem, granted.

Actually, sales are about the same across the board. Toyota, Honda, Kia, Subaru, and Nissan are reporting similar declines in sales.

I was watching CNBC earlier and they said that the TARP could be very profitable for the Taxpayers.
We could then use that money to pay down debts.

Um, yeah.  The same assets that are worthless today will become worth more because of the passge of time and because of the government's charp money management skills.  Riiiiight...

CL, you cannot blame all of this on the unions.  And especially not on union wages - Michael Moore's Roger and Me movie made it clear that laid-off autoworkers not only expect a healthy wage but also do not have the work ethic of a fast food worker.  The management has permitted this situation to develop over years in which they overpay workers, give big bonuses to management, produce inferior quality cars, etc.  The very fact that there are multiple issues that have been permitted to continue for years shows that management has been ineffective, although well paid.

Personally, I cannot imagine an "orderly" BK under the cirumstances.  I'm assuming that Bush is simply talking tough to improve his leverage in any deal.  Then again, I thought he was using the UN resolution about force in Iraq as a negotiating tool, and he surprised me then.

Chrysler was down 47% percent last month. GM down 42%. Honda and Toyota aren't even close, and they are already thinning out their trucks and SUVs, something companies like Chrysler can't do...because they don't make anything else.

Jeep is Chrysler's leg that deals in SUVs and such. Off the top of my head I can't think of any SUVs in the Dodge or the Chrysler lines, so I'm not exactly sure what gave you that impression.

Edited to add:

Ahh, perhaps the Dodge Dakota? That's one...ahh and the T&C.. thats two...

There's hope yet.  Perhaps this time Gettelfinger and his UAW parasites will get the message:  the days of bleeding the Big Three are over.

Why not ? The capitalists parasites between their $millions and incompetance have already eaten the auto industry bare. You can bet management will continue to bleed the industry for all the $millions they can. The first purpose of a public corporation.

Can't wait for when I can become one of the great unwashed heros of capitalism taking a 2nd and 3rd job to keep those parasites on wall street rich.

Dodge Durango (which is dead as of today), also Chrysler Aspen, Dodge Nitro, Dodge Journey (crossover), Dodge Ram of course (their big seller), Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country (minivans of course, but not good on gas), Pacifica (crossover/minivan), etc.

Chrysler dropped the Neon since they were unable to compete in that segment with the Japanese and Koreans (small cars). Their new midsize cars have been a disaster. And the 300C/Charger/Challenger are a dead end since parent Daimler gave them up for adoption.

They had their deal with Chinese (Chery) cancelled recently, and the only cars they have in the pipeline are going to be rebadged Nissans (Renaults).

It is sad, because it didn't need to happen this way.

Henry Ford built Detroit, not the UAW. He also built the middle class.

The only reason Ford is in better shape is he set his family up for future generations, and they have taken better care of the company than those whose name isn't on the building.

If you hate capitalism so much maybe you can get on a 50 year list for a Trabant like they had in the Eastern Block.
