Many companies use year end results to evaluate management performance to determine if any pay adjustment has been earned. Many of the 'hat in hand' CEO's came through the evaluation still overpaid with their new PR department pay structure, $1/Year. However, one group getting less than 15% positive evaluation rating from their 'bosses', decided that they earned a $4,700/year raise - Congress. Wise men these elected special interest and PAC representatives. The legislated themselves automatic raises to make sure they can come back home to their constituency and not be on record for any vote in favor of the pay raise. They'll also point out the the percentage amount is less than the automatic COL SS increase. However, it should be noted that the cash amount exceeds the total average case impact of SS increase by a factor of 10. I know my father and mother won't be upgrading from generic mayonnaise to Hellman's as a result of their $468 annual benefit increase. quote:
A crumbling economy, more than 2 million constituents who have lost their jobs this year, and congressional demands of CEOs to work for free did not convince lawmakers to freeze their own pay.Instead, they will get a $4,700 pay increase, amounting to an additional $2.5 million that taxpayers will spend on congressional salaries, and watchdog groups are not happy about it. “As lawmakers make a big show of forcing auto executives to accept just $1 a year in salary, they are quietly raiding the vault for their own personal gain,” said Daniel O’Connell, chairman of The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a non-partisan group. “This money would be much better spent helping the millions of seniors who are living below the poverty line and struggling to keep their heat on this winter.” Source: http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/with-economy-in-shambles-congress-gets-a-raise-2008-12-17.html quote:
WASHINGTON — Congressional job approval ratings have sunk to their lowest point in three decades, according to the latest Gallup Poll. A survey of 1,016 adults taken July 10-13 found that 14% approve of the job Congress is doing. That's half President Bush's record low 28% job approval number, and the lowest congressional rating since Gallup first began asking the question in 1974. Seventy-five percent disapprove of Congress and 10% have no opinion, the poll found. POLITICS BLOG: Congress' ratings keep going down Let the "not my guy" and "not my party" rationalizations begin.
