With economy in shambles, Congress gets a raise

Nice to know Congress is doing its part to stimulate the economy.[8|]

Hardcore left or right. Wanting to stab each other in the toes but they always agree on giving themselves more of our money.

Seems that way....

Anyone out there still think the hanging, drawing, and quartering idea is a bad one?

Wouldn't it be nice if their salary increases could only come from profits made with the money loaned in the buyout program.

If any of these creeps gave a rat's a** about the current state of the economy, they'd be willing to take pay cuts rather than giving themselves raises.  Politicians ~ had no use for them in the past, have no use for them now, and have no need of them in the future.  They make me sick. [>:]

I hate to be the defender of Congress...but is it really their fault that our economy is in the condition it is in today?... How about yourself...do you deserve a raise this year...because some greedy industrialists and bankers have screwed up our economy do you not still deserve a raise?

They are an easy target to blame for everything ...but...in reality had little to no control over the forces that brought us to this point.

Not entirely. But the fiascoes of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are their fault. Congress fed the housing bubble.

Not only do they not deserve a raise, but they should give back the salary they have been paid thus far. They've done nothing to merit compensation, so they should be uncompensated.

Raechard -> RE: With economy in shambles, Congress gets a raise (12/19/2008 2:06:33 PM)

Why shouldn't they get a raise? I mean you are all for giving people tax cuts and because they don't pay tax they are obviously being discriminated against. Therefore they should be reimbursed some other ways.[8|]

We have the same problem in the UK; the only thing here MP's can agree on is a pay rise for MP's.

Didn't say congress was responsible for anything, other than being filthy swine, as all politicians are.

As for a raise, I'd have to actually get a paycheck before I can answer that as I take care of my UMs and go to school.  What would you say that is worth? [8|]

They may not be to blame, but, when you hear the Congress and those in the White House speaking of these "hard economical times"...speaking of everyone needing to do their part to help in the recovery....hear them raking the execs of the big 3 over the coals for the salaries they make. When you watch the numerous businesses folding or downsizing. The company I work for has placed salary freezes, so even my little 5% raise isn't going to happen (I'm just thankful to have a job at the moment). When I have a son in the military that isn't even considered for any kind of raise in pay. How can they, the Congress, have the balls to give themselves a raise. I think they all need to be sent home packing and put some ordinary folks in office. Ones that know how to live within a budget.

but as the article says they have to vote to undo it not vote to get one
and the same is for their pensions errr golden parachute they have in place with retirement
also the wives or significant others get paid after serving only 5 years

talk about a big ol ponzi scheme

So we know it will never be repealed. It's just one of those things that really irrates me.

MasterG2kTR -> RE: With economy in shambles, Congress gets a raise (12/19/2008 7:07:49 PM)

True, they need to vote to undo it....permanantly....otherwise it is just an automatic raise every year. However, that does not mean that they cannot refuse (by way of a personal decision) to take the raise. It has been done before, where individual members have refused their annual raise.

I will also voice my agreement in that, they should not get a raise this year. It should not be an automatic raise, they should be treated just like any other business does. If the company is doing well, you get a raise, if the company is floundering, you get, a small or, no raise.
