Okay, it is that wonderful time of the year again.... and no, I am not talking about the holidays!

I am referring to that wonderful time of the year known as cold and flu season!

Now of course, you have to deal with all those people who claim never to get sick, have some great home remedy, OR, claims that if you had taken better care of yourself, you would not have gotten sick in the first place.

I have had one cold this season and it was a lulu...hard to get rid of. Lucky for me, AlkaSeltzer Plus is a wonder drug.

i'm one of those who rarely get sick ...and if i do get a cold/flu, i don't let it stop me from working unless it's a really bad case.

I have been grossing friends out by saying that I have become a mucous factory in the past week!! I have had been unwell for about 6 days with earaches, sinus headaches, fever, sore throat, swollen glands, coughing, sneezing, nose dripping constantly and bleeding from me blowing it so much.....gosh, is there such a thing as too much information??

I took one day off work midweek in the hopes it would help but have been too busy to take any more time off.

I am sucking lozenges constantly, using eucalyptus inhalations every few hours, rubbing any type of balm I can find on my head and chest, taking panadol, antibiotics (suggested by the doctor), trying to get lots of rest (using my lap top in bed counts as rest right?) and drinking loads of water.....and I still feel like hell.

I need to get rid of the ear aches and sinus infection before I fly on wednesday. Thankfully my friends and colleagues have all been showering me with sympathy and my family will take care of me for two days when I am with them so life is wonderful.

I had been doing so well and hadn't gotten it. However, it now seems that I have and while not horrid
I am not feeling great either. My fear is that it will get worse and I have been asked to step up and
be acting clerical supervisor this next week at work and I have to drive my 80 yr old parents over to my sister's on Christmas Day and back home. I just want to be WELLLLLLLLLLLLL.

I wouldn't mind it if I got it legitimately..but Master Flies..constantly and NO One ever seems to think that flying while contagious might not inconvenience others...sigh..he gets it..then I do.

I work in a school - colds and flu and every other kind of seasonal bug are an occupational hazard.

I had a kid come to school puking and crying, and when parents were rung to say their child wasn't fit to stay in school, mum said that SHE had a stomach bug and wasn't well enough to care for her kid!

Luckily missed that particular bug, but got ALL the others. My head is full of snot, I'm sure of it. I'm frightened to blow my nose in case I find brain matter in my hankie....

I caught this mess from my grandkids. Being the loving (okay, I spoil em rotten and send em home wired on sugar and pizza.... and all of them like coffee) and one weekend I had the three darlings and they had coughs and sneezes....

A few days later my sister and I had the coughs, sneezing and I felt like I had been hit by a truck, that backed over me two or three times to make sure the job was done.

I have discovered two things...

One, sneezing and coughing seem to aggravate the muscles in the lower back, which in my case is god awful painful, and....

Two, it has helped me cut down on my smoking, from a pack a day to between 6 and ten smokes a day....

I have a vaporizer going in my room, and in the kitchen, living room, and dining room, and no, I am not using the normal stuff for the things, I actually have been putting in eucalyptus oil which is doing a much better job.

I have been drinking green tea with honey for the sore throat, water and juice to stay hydrated, and occasionally put a mixture of oils in an incense bowl and put a candle under it.

Look, those medieval healers had the right idea, certain oils when heated actually help break up congestion! I use sage, juniper, clove, cinnamon, and myrrh.

The only thing that worries me is that what ever I have is immune to my chili and home made salsa.... the chili is your standard fare, beef, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, habanero peppers, jalapeno peppers and chili powder.

And the salsa is what I consider mild, as long as you dont put exposed skin in the steam over the pot, it kinda acts like pepper spray.

throw in garlic - chomp a raw clove or two. antibiotic, expectorant and decongestant all in one flavourful little package.

and it's handy to keep vampires away as well

after battling a cold for about two weeks i am happy to announce that this morning i woke up with a head that is stuffier than ever. Don't these stupid cold germs know i do not have the time to get sick? Don't they know it is Christmas? And why...oh why are they picking on me?

and then roast a head of garlic and throw it in the mashed potatoes. a touch of salt, and LO should be able to absorb the goodness and avoid the sickies.

I've been sick as a dog all week with a horrible sore throat. I was checked for strep and mono and both (fortunately) came up negative. The doc concluded I have a viral infection in my throat. Oh happy happy joy joy.

Nothing worked for it - vitamins, rest, lozenges, chloraseptic, warm brandy - nothing. And then my mom called and told me to make the following concoction (which, by the way, is nasty). I did, took a couple of teaspoonfuls every time my throat acted up, and by the end of the day my raging sore throat was gone:

Apple cider vinegar
Cayenne pepper
Lemon
Honey
Water

I couldn't remember how much of each to put in so I improvised (I put in wayyyy too much Cayenne at first and had to dilute with more water). It burns your throat (and mouth and lips) but when the burning feeling goes away it is quite soothing. Kills a cough, too. She's given this to me before, too, and it has worked and after this week I swear by it.

Hopefully no one beats me too badly for providing one more home remedy!

Slight hijack... in my fever-induced, watery-eyed state, I saw that as "the DOG concluded I have a viral infection in my throat"... probably since the word "dog" was in the previous sentence.

Had to read it three times, all the while thinking... "am I delirious? did she say her DOG diagnosed her? WTF???"
