The DL could be a problem for someone without a scanner, but frankly, as a very protective male, these days I think women have to take every sensible precaution. I'd also suggest such things as carrying along a cell phone and calling a friend with his car's license tag, calling again if you end up in an apartment.
Of course guys worry about coming across that stalking Fatal Attraction / Play Misty who'll puncture his tires, shoot out his windows, and poison his dog.
