Agh.  I do not want to leave here for Michigan.

Dammit.

kyraofMists -> RE: Socked In? Froze Up? (12/21/2008 5:50:30 PM)

It is -32 C here or -25 F and supposed to get down to -36 C or -33 F.

He was out working last night and it was -40 C/F.

It is cold but we are prepared and snuggly tucked inside.

My pipes are frozen... so much for heat tape and other preventitive measures!  The fridge went down and while I tried to find something I could afford... while using the outside to cool what food is left... now I have no water and could have new busted pipes down there!  The washer pump is leaking... the dryer was clogged but not now... I sit here warm in side and am glad the heater is still on! lol

If you can get close to where the pipes are coming in from the cold, you may be able to thaw them with a space heater, hair dryer, or even a 100-watt lamp (incandecent, or even better, halogen- not an "energy saving" CFL bulb) placed directly underneath. Then, as Sanity mentioned, leave a tap or two just drizzling. Best chance is to do it now, while you still have a little of the heat of the day; otherwise, when the temps drop overnight, you'll have an even greater chance of them freezing to the point of breaking. Good luck...

After crawling all over the place... my son in law found it was exactly what you say here!  A couple minutes with a blow dryer and water was spraying all over outside.  I now have a waterfall in my bathroom making sure it doesn't do it again!  The heat tape was working every where else.  So no busted pipes!  Woohoo... merry christmas to me!

Thank you!  Happy Holidays!

It's cold, damned cold. Zero degrees F with a windchill of -28........last I checked.

Thursday night and Friday morning we had an ice storm that put 3/4 of an inch over the 8 inches of snow already on the ground. We were certain we were going to loose power long enough to need the generator, but we only had two outages that lasted approx 2 hours each. Because of the pellet stove the house is toasty warm. I am sitting here in a t-shirt, socks and undies.

Yes, everytime I go outside to check on the horses or run the dogs it is a 3-5 minute process to get dressed. And yes I hate it and it sucks. But such is life in rural Iowa.

Ya know, when I was on the other thread reading about fudge and other assorted goodies, I kept thinking it might be nice to actually meet LaTigresse. Now I'm not so sure. It's bad here, but not that bad.

leakylee -> RE: Socked In? Froze Up? (12/21/2008 8:05:45 PM)

sand angels are much warmer, and dont freeze the metal peices in my body. i learned about that the hard way. thank you for thinking  of me though.

It's cold and I hate it.  No snow or ice or any of the stuff coming down, but I just hate the winter months.  Ick...

Here in London the clouds are kind of light grey and the rain is cool and refreshing.

mydomsabstrd -> RE: Socked In? Froze Up? (12/21/2008 8:47:25 PM)

Celene -> RE: Socked In? Froze Up? (12/21/2008 9:51:01 PM)

You can have mine. We got a foot or more on Wednesday and it isn't warming up enough to melt it. I have lots of damaged trees to clear. But the pipes are okay.... so far as I know. I'm not testing things at this point and I hope I didn't jinx myself saying that. The forecast is calling for more precip... as we used to say in Oregon "it would have to warm up to rain".
Stay warm and dry everyone. Sunny thoughts to all.

It should be 77 on Chistmas day in Daytona Beach.  I hope to have margaritas on the beach again this year.

We've had ice last week, and the low is supposed to get to around zero tonight.  Wind chill's going to be around -10 to -20 overnight through Monday morning.

Tuesday through Tuesday night should get us an ice/snow event.

We had about two inches of powdery before, but what we're getting right now is wetter, and so it's probably going to have a frozen crust on top of it by the end of the day. So to answer your question, wet and dry cement...

Hahahahahaha. Sorry, but that's nothing: they're counting the snow fall in FEET here this weekend. It's absolutely fucking insane. It's fluffy, mind you... but cold, and the visibility is nil. [:(]

New Hampshire!  Holy shit!  It was bad enough in Poughkeepsie, let alone all y'all up there!

thornhappy, who once lived in Maine (winters, too!)

well thorn ( and kittin ) it is feet in Maine this morning. Sucks sucks sucks...[:@]

Maya2001 -> RE: Socked In? Froze Up? (12/22/2008 6:01:24 AM)

I am socked in at the moment but have lots of supplies on hand

-the weather forecast changed again today  -we  have been hit with a couple snowstorms in the last few day and are get another today  ...I am going to have to got out and brave the wind chill , bundle up, wrap a scarf around my mouth/face so I am not breathing in the cold air directly  ,  dig out the snow blower pray it starts and clear before this before the next storm hit  otherwise will be too deep for snow blower,  more snow coming  on the 24th with continued  winds and I am supposed to be travelling that day for christmas...I will take the dog with me as well as my shit load of meds  and will stay there overnight if things get too nasty rather than risk driving home again

segment for our weather warnings for today

quote:

HEAVY SNOW AND WHITEOUTS IN SNOWSQUALLS TODAY....
WIND CHILL WARNING..THE COMBINATION OF STRONG WESTERLY WINDS AND VERY COLD ARCTIC AIR IS PRODUCING EXTREME WIND VALUES OF MINUS 30

It is one of the joys on living here being boxed in between  the great lakes ,,when the wind is coming from the west or northwest moisture is picked up off of Lake Huron  so we get dumped on..if wind is coming from the south moisture is picked up off Lake Erie so we get dumped on,  if coming from the east or  south east  moist is picked off Lake Ontario/lake Erie so we get dumped on

Be careful.

sirsholly -> RE: Socked In? Froze Up? (12/22/2008 6:46:39 AM)
