For me I am usually drawn into looking at it more closely by title, If they're stacked spine out, if I can see the artwork on the cover, then that makes me look closer.

Have you ever taken a chance on a book you knew nothing about because the name and the cover art looked good? I know in libraries sometimes if I am in a hurry, I'll grab books that sound good or looked neat and I haven't read the synopsis yet.

I buy books by subject....but, I don't really read much fiction...everything is based on topic, then author.

With new books, firstly, can I afford the book, secondly, do I really need it, other than that, I tend to have the fun of seeking second hand books, generaly pre owned course text books and anthologies by artists, past and present. I have a sizeable collection of good condition, pre owned , in print specialist books to do with my interests, a collection I would not be able to afford if I could not aquire second hand.

I also have a sizeable collection of out of print, first edition text books and art books, one of which the last time I checked Amazon, a later version of the one I had was being sold for £65, the book La Technique photographique     by L.P Clerc, I really must get around to selling that book,as I cannot read french.

But the seeking of second hand books I find fun, as to the places it takes me and the people I meet, it is always good when I find a rare gem whilst seeking another, the last time this happened, the rare gem was Dark Summer by Bob Carlos Clarke, one of my most favourite photographers, and a book I could not afford when it came out back in 1984, nor can do now, as it is out of print.

Second hand books, other peoples cast offs fits with my ethics as well, recycling.

Yes, second hand is very nice way to go. I don't buy books at all ever with exception to special cases any more. I find ones I want record the tittle then go look for them at the local library.
