Okay, so here's the story...Not very sordid, but it'll show Your age if You get it.
My mom was pregnant with me and told my sister's they could pick my name. Well, across the street from our house was this dog whose name was "penny" so my sister's decided they wanted to name me that...............after a dog..........however, my mom  told them NO (thank freaking god). However, my sisters were aparently big fans of the electric company...Anyone remember Jennifer of the jungle?  Yep, that's me alright.

My given name is Margaret. My nickname is Mia. In high school I was Meg, in the family I am Margaret or Sissie or Tia.  I answer to them all.

Fannie you are NOT naming your daughter after a pron star!

Lady H.-

I am not naming her after a porn star.  Just because there is a porn star with that name, doesn't mean that's where it came from!  I want to name her for my dad.  But hey, I'm Sara Lynn.  Another pornstar name.  But at least with the last name, it's ok... I don't know ANYONE that isn't in the family with the same last name as Sweets.  It's very unusual. (To me anyways)

Jo, short for Joanne.
My brother chose it. Mum wanted Rachel Jayne, Dad wanted Joanne louise. So they let my bro decide.

fine...as quite a few of you here already know anyway...my name is Silke...which is
"German diminutive of CELIA" (or as I was told in germany a diminutive of Cecilia) and has nothing to do with bloody silk and does not make me silky either (am at times bloody fed up that people here in UK aren't quite able to just get my name how it is, even when some of them I do know by now since 2 years plus, it shouldn't be that difficult to pronounce my "e" as it is at the word "elephant").

To continue my annoyance my surname doesn't make it any better for me here in UK as my surname is Dippe and I get often told that my character would fit perfectly to it...which is when people pronounce it wrong again into "dippy".

(it also does not mean to "dip" "silk" into any pot either). According to some name pages (I checked it coincidentially due to other circumstances) it even seems to mean "blind"...well, am not commenting on that link...

However, my parents decided that if I am born on an even date I will be named Silke and at an uneven date Jenny. Thank goodness I didn't end up being a Jenny (though it would make it easier being named properly over here).

When I was born my name simply was a modern name and my mom liked it. I know 13 people at home with that name all in the age range +5 years older to -5 years younger...below this name isn't common anymore these days...

What a fun thread!

I about spewed coffee everywhere, RS is the Son of Sam.  Tee hee!!!

And 6 pages, and I am the second Monica.  Whoopee!  The other Monica must share my pain about not being able to find rainbow pencils and erasers with Monica on them.  Once I moved to the West Coast, they were everywhere.  (Must have been a common Latino name, I really don't know) Not everywhere enough for me to not move away, though.
