LaMalinche -> RE: Brats (12/31/2005 8:16:23 AM)

Okay, a question for you all. If I am reading this correctly, being a brat is essentially behaving will ill-manners. Is this correct?

Really stomping a foot in public? *shudder*

Deliberatly disrupting a conversation for attention (I am assuming that there was no emergency or injury) for attention? *shudder*

Being rude or arguementative, without a good reason, in public? *shudder*

I thought that these were all things we learned NOT to do at age five. (Yes, I realize we go through number three again as teenagers) But really, as adults?

I remember the last time I stomped my foot. I was doing it as a mockery to reassure my friend because some plans we made fell through. They were very worried and upset that I would be upset. So I finally said, "Well, I am just going to stamp my feet now." Did about four patters never raising my feet more than 1/4 inch off the floor, and then asked, "Do you feel better now?" She laughed, I laughed, but it helped her realize that I wasn't upset, and that I understood that life happens.
But I am guessing that this is not the type of foot stomp that was being refered to.

I am asking, because I had been mentally associating being a brat with witty comments, scarcasm (irony actually), and playful banter. Things that I do all the time. In any too serious situation, I will likely be the one to make the remark that makes people laugh and thereby diffuse tension. Would this or would this not be, "being a brat"?

I would have said yes before, but this isn't the first thread I have read about this, and I am being to wonder.

More and more I am begining to think that "being a brat" refers to a lack of propriaty, decorum, appropriate behavior, passive aggressive behavior, and dignatas.

Am I understanding this correctly?

Thank you

LaMalinche

I hope so. Because otherwise....I'm a brat. And that just can't be.

IrishMist -> RE: Brats (12/31/2005 8:38:01 AM)

LaMalinche,

from my perspective, being a brat is someone who goes out of their way to draw attention themselves that is inapproiate. For example,

We are going out for the evening, I don't want to go, but I am told that I have to...so I pout, make sarcastic comments, and generally am a pain in the ass...it turns what could have been a pleasant evening into one that is instead very unpleasant.

Now, on the other side, I can very playful, sassy, opinionated, and draw attention to myself in that way, but it's not the same as going out of my way to make my partner uncomfortable because he forced me to do something that I did not want to do.

Just my perspective on it though.

Well Said, I'm sure there are more of us who've assumed Brat status over the same issues. Thanks for a wonderful reply.

Thank you Katylied, IrishMist, and Quivver.

Gives me some things to think about.

ANy other responses are welcome.

Of course, now I am wondering why anyone, no matter their designation, would want to be seen as essentially uncouth? *sigh* I suppose that it is one of those human nature things that I will never understand.

And if an ingrediant of being a brat is uncouthness, and the rest of the list I gave earlier, I don't think I will delf-designate myself that way anymore (I am talking about in my own mind).

Hmmm, also wondering when a certain someone is going to read this thread and personally respond to me about it. That could be informative.

Thank you all again. Happy New Year

xxblushesxx -> RE: Brats (12/31/2005 11:58:59 AM)

I behave myself in public. And around others. If I had a master, I would never want to cause him embarassment. Plus, my inclination is to please.

The doms I have become closest to, have invariablly called me a brat, but in an affectionate way. More of, "I really need to give you a good spanking, don't I?" than, "Jeesh, would ya knock it off already?"

And yes, my grandma always said that my mouth would get me in trouble.

Anyway, you know, maybe we are just talking about personalities. It is difficult to put people with all their foibles and differences into neat little boxes. I am absolutely sure that some who swear they can't stand brats could become v good friends with me, given the chance.

Given the choice, I like to laugh and play, not be overly serious and regimented.

Bratty sub is an ill-mannered annoying immature person
IMO, Nothing sweet or cute about that behavior
playful is some thing different- it brings smiles and laughs/fun

Ther are those who see formality, protocol, ritual and tradition as a straight jacket. They rebel any way they can. Then, one day, they grow up...

Nendarye -> RE: Brats (12/31/2005 9:32:57 PM)

There is a time and a place for everything. When you act out at the wrong time, it's not good lol...But when you are playful, flirty, and just a bit cheeky, at the right time...well, that makes for smiles all around :)

OscarHargraves -> RE: Brats (12/31/2005 10:23:27 PM)

I'm non-tolerant of brats, either in my children or my Subs.

LaMalinche -> RE: Brats (1/1/2006 9:11:25 AM)

Thank you all.

I appriciate it very much and I hope you all have a Happy New Year!!!

I think that my grandma taught me too many manners to ever truely act like a brat.

**Note to self, CALL AND THANK HER. (Not difficult, I call every Sunday anyway)

Another thought does occur, I don't think that "brats" are limited to submissives in BDSM, I have found them everywhere, all three genders, all ages (although young ones I have hopes of them growing out of it), and all orientations of life. Perhaps I should invest in a case of Emily Post or Miss Manners to hand out. Or, better still, send them to my grandparents for a couple weeks. [:D]

Again, thanks to all who responded.

Sensualips -> RE: Brats (1/1/2006 12:15:57 PM)

My interpretation of brat is someone that deliberately or subconsciously misbehaves in order to gain attention. The degree of misbahvior is what takes it from playful to bad-brattiness in my opinion. I think brat is in the eye of the beholder.

I have been referred to as a bratty little bottom, a smart ass, and completely charming by three different people -- all referring to the same behavior they just witnessed. They were probably all correct.

Personally, I have no time for anyone who acts out to get attention (my definition of a "brat"). I would never begrudge another of their kink, but I want a slave that wants to submit.

Ditto 110%.

MissHarlet -> RE: Brats (1/1/2006 7:14:27 PM)

I dislike brats intensly and never spank or session them as punishment ..why give them something they want for unacceptable behaviour ... my punishments are NEVER fun or something they want or crave.

I however do love a feisty sub .. and there is a BIG difference in the two.

some are children playing at being adults...and granted, sometimes, it can come from confusion...but when it's ongoing,and constant...then you have to stop and think of the reason WHY it is happening.

Like everyone has said...brattiness is looked at by others in different ways. It all depends on the people involved. Most would consider me a brat...too outspoken, etc...but at the same time, I know my place, and that's all that counts.

LOL, that I can understand. It was never tolerated in me, and I absolutly refuse to tolerate it in my daughter.

ehlovindom -> RE: Brats (1/1/2006 7:41:44 PM)

A common definition of brat is: ill-mannered child.

I can only speak for myself when I say that the last person I wish to have a relationship with is an ill-mannered child. However, this is not the same as someone who can be playful, teasing, sarcastic or even tempestuous. After all, that can add spice to the relationship.

Mylee -> RE: Brats (1/1/2006 9:47:19 PM)

I am playfully bratty once and a while, but even then we both know who is in charge and who's holding the leash, sometimes He likes to play along and then He has more to act on..but i also am always looking for the sign that says 'One more step missy, and you've crossed to far' its always down playfully for us and never me just being a flat out brat because i dont 'feel' like behaving..i think if its all done in fun, then go for it, but if it's done just to disobey or upset the Master, NO WAY !

I doubt you could come up with a consensus defintion, let alone a consensus opinion.

Note: Dom/mes can also be brats, more commonly referred to as assholes.

Manawyddan -> RE: Brats (1/2/2006 5:06:07 AM)

Brats: short term, can be amusing. Long term, merely tiresome.

Mmm, I dunno. I've been called a bratty dom, but I'm not really an asshole type (though this refers to the playful sort of brattiness above ... at least I like to think so!).
