Gorgias -> Slightly numb thumb a day after play (12/23/2008 9:35:18 AM)

This is probably something minor, but I don't want to take any chances.

So last night I was tied up in a pretty uncomfortable position.  Cuffs around both wrists, tied to posts above and to the left and right of my body respectively, with cuffs around my ankles doing something similar.

Anyway, the long and short of it is, while blood flow quickly resumed normal operations everywhere else (my circulation is poor... bad trait for a sub to have, I know), my left thumb still feels a little... odd.  It's hard to explain how it feels: it's fine when its on it's own, but whenever its pressed up against something (like, say, the space bar on a keyboard) it feels a little like it does when your foot is asleep or something, only it just feels like there's an... emptiness? inside, instead of the usual stabbing pain you get from one of those.

Anyway, if the feeling doesn't go away in a few days (or whatever you guys think the required time is), what should I do?

numbness like that is generally a sign of nerve trauma. If you can move it and have feeling in all parts of the thumb it is probably going to heal with time. If you can, take an antiinflammatory (motrin is good) to ease any swelling.

Asprin.

Take ONE and then move your thumb about.

I am a Diabetic happens to me all the time.

Go get your Cholesterol Checked and then explain to your doctor your circulation problems and ask if an Asprin Regiment would be good for you.

Then you would take a Low Dose of Asprin every day.

Easy Peazy.

i'm just gonna throw in my advice that ya might need to avoid long (the length of time that is will vary for each individual) periods of time being restrained seeing as how you already have circulation problems. This fact should be shared with anyone you're going to play with and play should be adjusted accordingly so something serious and long-term doesn't occur.

Every time I have ever played with metal cuffs I have had that happen....which is why I don't play with metal cuffs anymore. They put pressure on the nerve at the wrist. It should return to normal but may take some time. Mine has been numb for as long as several weeks after. If you have poor circulation (which is a different issue than nerve impingement) you should be careful with restraints. I have found that leather suspension cuffs work best.

I had the same thing happen once when I yanked myself out of some ties (An ex-bf didn't like anything that looked 'harsh', so insisted that tying be done with neckties).  I just seem to have tweaked a nerve and things went back to normal after a couple of weeks.  It was a disconcerting sensation, though.  I'd give it a couple of weeks unless additional symptoms develop.
Best wishes,
  Davan

Have you considered soft restraints instead of the metal cuffs?
You may want to try that instead.
I have noticed with some sub/slaves the use of soft collars. This is usually having to do with either transfer from the leather to the skin because of perspiration which of course is not uncommon. Chaffing of the neck due to constant wear. which often occurs with a posture collar at the base of the neck and below the jawline. It is also makes the wearing of the collar quite comfortable.
I would recommend other forms of restraint.
Could even try the shibari technique of binding the wrists. Very sure there is a similar use of rope for the ankles.
Not very partial to the use of metal cuffs as I tend to move around a lot when I am restrained.

yeah, the cuffs were leather, not metal.  Sorry for being unclear in my first post.

Just so you know, if there is some nerve damage, nerves do heal but they are slow healing so your thumb might feel weird for quite some time.

i've had this happen to me, mine usually goes away within a few days.

i hope yours does too! Being tied up is my favorite, and is a lot of fun, but with all play stay safe and have fun. =)

You're dom needs to know what type of pain to watch out for. Numbness is a sign of nerve impingement. Most likely it is not permanent. But you should always have a dom who asks how your hands and wrist feel. You should also keep him abreast of any coldness, tingle, shooting pain. If you dont' communicate he may not know. But he should still be feeling your hands. If they are getting cold he should stop. There is a time limit for how long you can cut off circulation.

Have you had a thorough medical check-up and discussed it with your Dominant? Especially that you knew that your circulation is not very good.
If the numbness persists go to a doctor, find out what's wrong and make your Dominant aware of your condition.

FYI - there is a nerve that runs from your spine down your arm and crosses over the inner edge of your forearm (read: directly "up" from your thumb, just elbow side of your wrist) and into your thumb.  as an experiment, about a finger up from your wrist, with your hand out straight (like you are going to shake someone's hand), rub up and down with a finger or two of the other hand.  After a bit, (and you may need to move up or down a little to find the spot) your thumb should start tingling.  Be careful of that "sweet spot" that makes your thumb tingle - that is where the nerve is crossing over.

Gotta love little factoids you learn about in workshops!

kiwisub12 -> RE: Slightly numb thumb a day after play (12/23/2008 7:35:29 PM)

Did the same thing the very first time i played. Was in leather cuffs, and leaned too  much weight onto my wrists. My thumbs were numb for about 4 months. Not badly numb but i had numb parts. One day i realised that i didn't have tingle there any more. Was cured.

You might consider suspension cuffs - where you hold a bar so your weight is more evenly distributed on your wrists.  Love them.

Its the Radial Nerve

... which is why the leather cuffs in my toy bag are fur lined ... the leather blindfold is padded on the inside ... the bondage rope is the softest I can find ... the nipple clamps all have adjustments (except the unadjustable clover which has a rubber tip) ... the floggers are soft leather ...

Only my hands are rough!

IronBear -> RE: Slightly numb thumb a day after play (12/24/2008 4:49:16 AM)

Perhaps you could experiment with different positions for being restrained....
