MHOO314 -> NY Superstitions (12/31/2005 4:35:34 PM)

well we all have them, or at least our family had them--so what are they?

We always:

Have black eyed peas to ward off evil
Have cabbage to bring abundance
Burn the Bayberry candle
A bayberry candle burned to the socket
Brings health to the home and money to the pocket

and do not do household or mundane chores because what you do on New Years, you do all year long.

What are your traditions/superstitions?

krikket -> RE: NY Superstitions (12/31/2005 9:08:49 PM)

just about the same ones, but i seem to remember ham hocks in there someplace too (with the black eyed peas..lol)

i'm from the deep south originally, so guess that's why our traditions are so similar...

Happy New Year,
jimini

Or at least none that I have ever thought were superstitions

[:o]

blushingberry -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 3:16:37 AM)

Having the cabbage is the only one that sticks to my mind.

Aileen68 -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 7:57:16 AM)

Lentil soup on New Years Eve to bring good luck for the year.

sanita -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 8:34:10 AM)

A kiss at midnight, so that what you are feeling at 12:01AM, you are feeling the whole year round.

MHOO314 -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 9:44:34 AM)

awwww, takes her tear stained hankie and seeks seclusion for a year--smiles, what a great tradition--

KatyLied -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 1:37:54 PM)

I don't do traditional stuff.
But my mom does, so tonight it's pork & sauerkraut (ewww!).

Dammit, I slept and cried and ate fattening food all day. Now you tell me!

siamsa24 -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 5:16:01 PM)

I refuse to kiss my partner at midnight for fear that it will bring bad luck and cause us to grow apart over the coming year.

Absolutely none.

quietkitten -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/1/2006 10:11:34 PM)

My family always opened the door and welcomed in the New Year so it would not get pissed off waiting outside in the cold. Honestly...

Now you know where I get my personality from.

Thanks for the warning. It diffinetly brings an abundance of gas and spending time in the bathroom for sure.
When you eat enough black eye peas, you will be warding off anything and everything.

FemDomHouTx -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/2/2006 5:36:08 AM)

Methinks it is bad luck to be superstitious............ [;)]

windchymes -> RE: NY Superstitions (1/2/2006 2:52:37 PM)

My grandma always threw a handful of change into the house as she was coming in the front door for the first time in each new year. She said that way money would be coming into the house all year long.

It never did, but we didn't want to burst her bubble.

I think everyone has some sort of superstitions though.
Ever pick up a penny and think about luck?

Mine are common and limited. Nothing for the New Year though.
