What is the best gift you gave someone this year, and why is it so great?

I'll start.... *cause I love being self indulgent...

I typed up all of Mistress' recipes and put them in a book.  These were recipes from her family with the original handwriting and splotches of oil or notes or suggestions or whatever on the 3 x 5 cards.  The originals were put in protectors with the typed copies. 

She was really surprised.  She was really touched by how much work I put into it.  I loved the shocked look on her face. 

What makes your gift giving.... so great?

Status: offline 		Sunny, that is awesome!!! i wish i could do this for my mom and my sisters........

i sent my mom an isabel bloom figurine thing. She loved it and sounded so proud and excited when she called me and she had gotten it. i got my sister some nice stuff from bath & body works, and the best part is it won't be delivered until tomorrow or Saturday so she'll be surprised. i bought Him a dvd player and wrote Him a letter which really touched Him. i gave Him all of myself in the letter to do with as He see's fit. Probably sounds stupid to most, but eh......And for the kids i frankly think i freaking rock!!!!! (<---note 5) it got them each two boughten gifts and them put together these 'stationary packets' where they have pens, writting paper, computer print paper, envelopes (already addressed to me) and stamps. That way they can write to me whenever they think about me.  And, i also got them a web cam, cause it kills me to not be there with them every day.......
i love You all so much. If i had a gift i could give each of you it would be the gifts of hope, trust, love, confidence, self acceptance, joy, forgiveness, and peace.

Status: offline 		Mine wasnt intended to be a xmas gift but just a gift for a good person in need.

To me those are the best of all, and I try not to just tie those to the holiday season.
If I can make one persons day that is in need a wee bit better its better than all the material gift I could ever send

Status: offline 		Mine was totally self-indulgent..

I haven't seen another living soul since yesterday afternoon on Christmas Eve, which was also the last time I ate anything.

I'm cleaning, writing, fasting, meditating and praying. This will continue until the morning of the 27th.

I'm giving myself a break, a fresh start, a new sense of self, of self-worth, letting go of whatever I can which has been negative, and leaving myself open for what is positive.

However I'm staying connected with everything and everyone around me.

Normal service resumes as scheduled on the 27th.

Simple restoration so that I can continue to give and share what I do normally.

Status: offline 		Stella, that is beautiful. I love the idea of spiritually renewing yourself from within for the new year. You are truly an admirable person.
 
My gifts were more mundane. This is the first year Master and I bought gifts for my ums together. Son #1 is away and will get something later. Son# 2 got a new boom box and dozens of cassette tapes of Master's from the 80's and 90's. He's really into the music and blown away by the player. My daughter got something she's wanted for ages- a bass guitar and amp. Master showed her the basics and she will get lessons (she already plays drums). She looks so cool with it.
 
Master and I exchanged commitment rings. They are white gold with diamond bagettes. This is the outer (vanilla) emblem of our love and committment to each other. This is the most amazing relationship I have ever experienced and it is forever. (and now we don't have to get married. lol. I like committment rings, but I'm still a committment-phobe. or, rather, a marriage-phobe.)

My family has been looking for it for years trying to buy it for him and I finally found a copy on Amazon.com. He told me afterwards that he'd given up hope of finding it.

Status: offline 		i love that Aquatic.....It always means so much to me when i can look at a gift and see the thought someone put into it to give it to me. For example, last night He gave me the Shrek soundtrack. Might not sound like much but when i had my accident at the end of August apparently my CD was lost.  It made my heart so happy to know He put that much thought into my gift.

Status: offline 		You know, it's the thought behind the gift... people say that, but when real thought is put into a gift, it is touching, no?

and Stella, good for you!  One thing I do every year is something that has been nagging me - maybe handling some bills, sewing on a button, writing a letter I hadn't wanted to write, polishing something... some little thing that irritates me.  This year, I'm returning a library book that is overdue.  eek!

hejira - you and Cufflicious are just wonderful.  Each time I read what you say or talk to you, I adore y'all even more.

Status: offline 		I try to constantly keep my eyes, ears and heart open so that I can pick up on the needs of others and do what I can to help.  Around the Christmas season this year (with Master's permission and blessing), I contributed in several ways. 

1.  I gave a monetary donation to a fund we have at work which helps out employees in need by allowing them to obtain small, no-interest loans for help in emergency situations.  The management had sent out a flyer asking for us all to give what we could as requests for help were up.  I have never asked for any of the money but I know I work with a fine group of people who sometimes need to ask for a loan.  I talked it over with Master and He thought it would be a good thing to contribute to.  I wrote a check to the accounting department and only two days later received a hand-written thank you card from our library director personally thanking me for my generous donation.  That really made me feel nice.  I didn't even know he would be told about it.

2.  I ran into a former co-worker whose currently job seeking and really having a hard time.  She didn't complain and go into a woe-is-me story but it was clear she was hurting financially.  I was able to write her a $100 check and slip it into her hand as we were parting ways.  When I was leaving work that day, my phone beeped and I saw where she had texted me.  She said that money was "like oxygen" to her and it brought tears to my eyes.  Something just told me to help her out as much as I could.  I know $100 isn't a fortune but when you're low on fuel or food, it can be a lifesaver.  I felt good about sensing her need.

3.  My favorite one:  In the library where I work, I have a friend/co-worker who is also always looking for ways to help.  We talked about any children we might be able to do something for this Christmas and came up with a family.  The mother brings her two little girls in regularly to children's programs and to check out lots of books.  My friend was aware that both parents had been working more than one job just trying to make ends meet and now the mother is down in her back.  The little girls are about 3 and 5, I'd say, and when my friend had asked them what they wanted for Christmas, the oldest one had said "just some candy."  My heart broke thinking of all the spoiled kids and how many would probably throw a hissy fit if all they were to get was some candy.  We decided to go together and get them a $100 Wal-Mart gift card but wanted to give it to them anonymously.  With the help of another co-worker and her family, we got it delivered to their house.  We had signed it "Mrs. Clause" and just explained that we were doing some good deeds for deserving families.  The father answered the door and was so thankful and happy.  They reported back to us how it had gone and we were so blessed to have been able to help.

These are just the most recent examples of things that I've tried to do to ease someone else's burden just a little.  I try to do stuff like that year round, not just at the holiday's.  I know that $50 here and $100 there isn't going to save the world, but it's what I can personally do to give someone a little hand and it sure makes me feel happy inside......................luci

Status: offline 		That reminds me of one of the first presents I got for Master. He's a Odd Couple fanatic and had been looking for a compilation DVD of the TV series for years. I found one from a Canadian company and ordered for Him. A few weeks later we had a lunch date- turned into four hours of talking and holding and kissing (they must have thought we were crazy- we never went back to that place.....lol.) Anyway, it was then that He told me He loved me for the first time....... Anyway, that afternoon, He returned home to find the DVDs. The timing couldn't have been better. He had no idea how I had found them and it meant so much to Him.
