The Sin in Doing Good Deeds

quote:

“Howard Schultz has done more for coffee-growing regions of Africa than anybody I can think of,” Michael Fairbanks, a development expert, said of the chief executive of Starbucks. By helping countries improve their coffee-growing practices and brand their coffees, Starbucks has probably helped impoverished African coffee farmers more than any aid group has.

Charity is good, but business is better--for everybody.

No, I will restrain myself.  I promised that I would play nice today.  But, in about three hours .....CL you are losing your chance at redemption. And, I am taking your $350,000 back. " No money for you."  Jack Abramhoff

Interesting. Having worked for a foundation many years ago, I do remember that lavish expense accounts made it difficult for these groups to obtain funding from us. After all, the $35,000 they had spent on executive lunches over the year could easily have gone to better use. Especially since those of us working at the foundation bought our own lunch everyday.

Unfortunately most groups can't show such a clear correlation between spending and income as he does. Raising 30 million and earning half a million is fine, using most of the monies raised to pay professional fundraisers is not. Around here, local police and fire departments use professional fundraisers who guarantee the department will get $5,000. What they don't say is that every dime past that goes to the fundraisers. So when they earn $10,000 and the donors believe all $15,000 is going to the volunteer fire department, that's when we get upset.

Only sometimes, CL, only sometimes.
