What a wonderful tradition in the UK.  The Queens Christmas message followed by a little sweet talk from the Iranian president.  http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1230111706616&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull
England, a country that gave us the core of law in the United States is now on it's way toward "sharia law" endorsed by the Archbisop of Canterbury.. http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article3335026.ece

Is there something in the water that is affecting the minds of just some people on the other side of the pond, or are we whitnessing the continued growth of muslim influence in the UK and Western Europe? Where is this all heading?

Tradition? my definition of tradition is more than one occurance of a Iranian head of state making a speech. Channel 4 has always been the station to go where others have not, and they have been pounded for their decision, hardly the makings of tradition. I doubt you will see a re occurance next chrimmy day.
The mad archbish isnt going to pass the sharia law on his own, he endorses it,so what? he is barking mad and not liable to get his own way much like the pope endorces no birthcontrol and not loving gays/transexuals.
oh and whats wrong with free speech?

This would have been a better link:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/faith/article3333953.ece

That's the full text of the Archbishop of Canterbury's lecture.  It's not as asinine as his critics have been making it out to be.

I find it difficult to measure "not as asinine"...just as I would about "a little preganat".  Hopefully, the Queen will
replace the Archbishop, and guide the church towards away from the parallel universe that this man seems to want for the UK.
Sharia is one of the most represive systems for the female gender in the muslim religion. It is also a system that places power in the hands of a few and we have had enough history to understand what road that leads a country down with respect to freedom for the individual.

It's amazing to me that I was hoping to have some discussion about views that people had, if any, on the good Dr. Rowan Williams and his thoughts on Shaira Law being a parallel system in England, and George Bush comes up in the conversation!
Using George Bush to change the subject is like modern day comedians with nothing to say in their act using the word fuck to get a cheap laugh from the audience.   It's going to be a one way conversation after Bush leaves office and people don't have him to kick around anymore. On second thought than we will probably be hearing about the "legacy of George Bush".  You are absolutely correct..."yawn".

Oh, but it doesn't have that inflammatory right-wingnut bullshit panache, Ja? Where would the wingnuts be without something to twist and spin?

Hmm, so Hippie kinkster, Lord and Master, and Owner 59 are in favor of special religous rights, such as the refusal of Pharmicists to dispense Birth controll (specifically mentioned in the full text of the speech).  And think we should move to a situation of seperate but "equal" laws.

Interesting....

Yeh, my Step dad used to say," if you can't win with facts and logic, bamboozle 'em with Bullshit."

The other part of the speech that made no sense at all was his trying to compare the enshrinement of Sharia courts for muslims ( as well as a system for jews, and unstated but obviously also for Christians), to Tribal jurisdictions in Canada.  Tribal law is locality based, not ethnically/ culturally based.  If you commit a crime in Nunavut, regardless of your ethnicity, you will be tried under the local tribal based law, with only a few protections to the national legal system.

If we don't get to see crap like the Iranian President's speech, how are we to make informed decisions about whether we agree with it or not?  Censorship of any form is a dangerous topic to argue, but I would rather we had too much freedom rather than have 'big brother' tell us what is wrong and what is right.

As for the sharia law thing - believe me, that's not going to happen!  Again, it's all about free speech.  We don't have to like what we hear, we don't even have to listen to it, but we also have the right to argue against it.  And believe me, there would be a lot of arguments against that one!

*shrugs* - I'd rather have this kind of thing out in the open and discussed than kept in the shadows and possibly implemented without our knowing about it.

Not really amazing.

American conservatives have been demonizing Islam,using fear, hate and loathing for years now.

The Sharia law thing in England is just part of this and old news.Yawn....

~~~~~~~~~~
The common denominator here is American conservatives,bush,Sharia law and hypocrisy.
We should give a fuck what the English might want to do(regarding Sharia),but mention that American conservatives took an active role in actually establishing hardcore Sharia law over millions of Iraqis(who before had a secular government,ie religious freedom)and my god, mouths start to foam.
If it bothers you about England,why no concern over the poor Iraqis who must now live(and die) under Sharia law?
I heard recently that 2000 Christians had to vacate a town they`d lived in for generations under the threat of death,by religious fundies there.Something that didn`t exist before we invaded.Mission accomplished.
The complete and utter failure that is bush and the Iraq invasion leave very little room for cheap laughs,I`m afraid.
"It's going to be a one way conversation after Bush leaves office and people don't have him to kick around anymore. On second thought than we will probably be hearing about the "legacy of George Bush". "
Not really.It`s going to take at least a decade or more to recover from what bush has done.The damage to our economy,our army,our good name and reputation are going to outlast bush by many many years.
No,when bush leaves office,his legacy or rather his pathology, will be with us long after and topical.
When you use the words"kick around anymore",it sounds like you`re suggesting that the criticism bush is getting is unfair.That`s puzzling.
That conservatives are attempting to hide from their responsibility for reestablishing Sharia law in Iraq(a major fuck up),now that`s amazing.
When exactly did this become a tradition?
Do you really think that because someone makes a speach endorsing something like "sharia law" it will suddenly become a fact. If that is the case we have a hell of a lot of things to look forward to in the future. It takes more than one Archbishop saying he agrees with something to make it a fact here.
Owner 59, why are you making the baseless claim that "that American conservatives took an active role in actually establishing hardcore Sharia law over millions of Iraqis"?
Ummm,because it`s true?
Fortunately for neo-conservatives,this fuck-up is far far out weighed by the other bigger,more deadly fuck-ups.
Like making Iran the major military power in the region.
Like creating millions and millions of refugees out of Iraq.
Like wasting the lives of over 4000 good,brave GIs.
Like throwing a half trillion dollars of our treasure into a sewer hole.
To name a few.
That is what the Arch Bishop is calling for Hippiekinkster.  Did you read the link LAM gave?   You apperantly agree with him that the Arch Bishops Speech was not asinine, at least that is what I got from your little post.
