jstmi -> positive outlook and yoga (12/28/2008 5:33:30 AM)

yesterday i had an amazing experience with a yoga class i had, it was a very highpaced type of class and it was geared to experienced yoginis , but my instructor is always happy to have people join and is always supportive of me despite my irregular attendance there. but now that i am working out and joined a club i felt really good about attending. for those that are familiar it was a "mala" class which is 108 sun salutations split into 4 sections of 27 movements. we began and i felt great about it and was able to keep up somewhat, but it was ok that i was winded and i did what i could and honored what my body was telling me. i rested and drank water and went to childs pose when i could.. i related this to my Ma'am and She thought i was beating myself up and She gave me an esteem exercise. i will do this because She has asked me but i still feel as if i was just explaining to Her how difficult the class was and how proud i was to do as much as i could without feeling any competition. this is what i like about yoga it is not competitive and you do what you can. it is important to me to always challenge myself and i want to work in the yoga into my excercise routine as much as possible and i know that i maybe the least experienced in the class- i guess my choice of words "weakest" was what She saw ,,. i was not saying i was weak, just my yoga experience Ma'am,,, i hope this doesn't sound like rambling but i was hoping to get some feedback and wonder what other people thought ..
thank Y/you all for listening..

oh and ps- i feel great today and have a little soreness but nothing too bad - gosh what an afternoon- i loved it!

Well done to you for the yoga, it is as an exercise absolutely superb exercise where the competition is only with the self. What's more, is there is no competition if you don't want it. Also it is the one exercise I have found that can quickly improve overall health and fitness, not to mention the relaxed states in between, such a depth of relaxation.

I often thought when actually engaging in the yoga practice, this would be a suberb exercise for D/s, for I do Iyengar yoga, which is very demanding, not demanding in physical exercise ways, but in what one has to do to achieve the correct result. It is all about moving the correct muscle groups, and the instructor is a complete bastard, he will not let anyone out of the pose until he has seen the muscle groups working correctly, the pain, the pain, but like wow, to how one feels afterwards and for the next few days.

I took Iyengar to sort out a frame that was kind of crumpled, a body that has done much and suffered many injuries over the years. You know that aching back, how you become used to it and the discomfort fades, well once the muscles get used to the new position, everything appears ok,but what might have happened is that the spine has taken on a new position, thus throwing everything else out, and more aches and pain arise. In a few months Iyengar corrected a lot of these alignment problems, to the point that I even walk differently now and wear my shoes out less.

Yoga is great, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve themselves, or even just feel a little relaxed.

thank You Aneirin for the encouragement and reply, i appreciate Your kind words.
i am quite impressed about Your story of Iyengar yoga, it sounds like it has done wonders for You. yes i totally agree with the fulfillment i get from yoga, it puts me in a really good place, i like all about it , the physical practice, sivasana and what happens to me during this whole process, i love the chanting the spiritual lift i get and the community feeling in my place. i was quite into this from dec of 04 to summer of 05 and omg it was wonderful. so my goal is to be able to get back into attending at least once maybe twice a week. for now i am building up to that by doing cardio 3 times a week with circuit training as well.
good luck to You in Your practice

My Yoga, I go through different shifts of mood with it, it starts with ' I don't want to go, let's just give it a rest this week and go next week ', to ' Stuff it, I have got to go, because I am only letting myself down if I don't go ' , to a fairly positive mood, I go, feeling positive until the first few asanas, where I am really regretting my decision to go. After I have loosened up a bit and those pleasant feelings have come from pain, I get into it and start enjoying it, though it bloody hurts and all too quickly it is over and I am full of the joys of spring. I leave the venue and feel really good about myself, and have a spring in my step. The next day, I feel it, the aches and pains of strained muscles, which only relents a couple of days before the next session, where I am looking forward to going again, assured what I was doing was doing me good. But come the day of the session, I am back to, ' I don't want to go ', phase again, and so the cycle continues.

I go through a love, hate relationship with my chosen exercise, hate, because I am basically lazy, love because I know it is doing me good and stopping me being lazy.

Because Iyengar is a yoga exercise which uses props, I have even got into the leg straightening exercises at home now. You know, where when some people age, their legs either bow outward for males or bow inward for females, well that can be corrected by a bit of self bondage and inversion. A couple of yoga belts, one around the shins, belted tight and the other around the thighs up by the hips, belted tight and the legs raised up against a wall, so they are inverted. Dubious I was of this at first, but it's working, and I do feel stronger in my walking movement.

A good guide to a person's movement, is to look at the soles of a well worn pair of shoes, look for where the wear is, and this should give an indication as to whether the walking, standing action is correct. Correct posture and carriage reduce the likelihood of problems in the rest of the body and problems in later life.

Yoga is cool, and it is for everyone and anyone, it is an exercise that requires little or no equipment, (I have even come across nude yoga in my town ), but one thing I wish, is that I hads found the delights of this exercise when I was an um, for umlike flexibility I could have maintained.

smiles, yes i know how the mood shifts and i used to struggle with going when i was going on a regular basis, going back and forth with my mind. well, i am glad i went and i am proud of my practice , because i went and tried my very best and when i got tired i rested. it is important to find positives in what one does everytime. and my yogini told me that we would definitely sweat and feel a "little" bit in our hamstrings today, omg she wasn't kidding, i especially noticed this just recently in the shower, lol, good thing i bought a stretching band which i intend on using today. i will take a rest today and go back to the gym tomorrow for some cardio..

i noticed that people say um for young or child? i am a little confused by this term , but i know if i had discovered yoga years back it would have been great - but never too late i say

CM frowns on discussions involving minors, so the forum posters and chatters use the term UM (UnMentionable) to refer to our children, or any other child.

welcome jstmi and wonderful yoga experience; thank you for sharing.

I started Vinyasa about 5 months ago to compliment my running. The stretching is wonderful. There are many, many other benefits which suprised me.

Though I had been running regularly for about a year yoga really kicked my butt hard. After ~ 3 months I began to feel more comfortable. Bala-asana is a "surrender" posture I use it often to rest, work through a challenge or just to find my center.

My experience is validated by your observations. For me yoga is about fully experiencing THIS MOMENT. Breath and the moment changes, next, next next next. Too often I'm living in the past or future. Life is what is happening right now.

And the growth in lexibility and endurance has been a great benefit.

My subby nature tells me I should be the best person possible to better serve, and to be something that another would be proud of. The benefits of self confidence and better health and peace also serve these interests.

Thanks for raising the topic and best wishes on developting your practice!

Congratulations on your yoga success!  I don't think you were beating yourself up, it sounds to me like you took on a physical challenge and handled it well!

I really enjoy Yoga.  I need to get back to doing it though.  I feel enlightened afterwards.
