I think boredom plays a big role in invention.  Remember the scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey where the ape figures out that bones make good weapons?  He's just sitting there in boredom banging a bone on the ground and on othe bones......Eureka!  He figures out that bones are hard and that they can use them to kill prey and fight enemies.  I imagine a lot of our inventions had their beginnings in that type of scenario.

Hello my name is Regulation and the start of all invention was due to..................aliens.

Also let us not forget the many things for which there was no reason to exist i.e. the shoe lace, the tie etc.

There is an old Chinese proverb: the chopstick is superior to the fork in terms of savouring the meal.

Yes but you don't want to be shovelling it in like you are feeding a steam train.

Term's example reminds me of B.C. Comics by Johnny Hart. The series is set in Prehistoric times and the characters are either cave people or various animals.  You can find this strip in most local newspapers.

Well this Shaman a long time ago got angry at the tribe and pissed in the coffee pot. Then he saw the effect on those that drank it.

Well, that's enlightening. Not the point. Who figured out how to make glass? Who figured out the crossbow? I mean, the progression from a bow to a crossbow isn't exactly obvious (too me, anyway). Who figured out how to make gunpowder? They just sat around combining shit and igniting it? Stoners?

See what I mean?

Actually, from the evidence, the asian branch of the species homo sapians, from which we, homo sapian sapians discovered that when certain types of manure (a common source for fuel for fires) were mixed and ignited, it exploded.

As the culture advanced from stone age to civilization, which by the way in asia was in the Indus river valley, these people took the trick with them and settled in China.

The crossbow did not evolve from the bow, but descended from the roman scorpion, which was discovered by the greeks who used it on thier ships to fire prehistoric napalm at enemy ships.

As for glass, that was simple deductive reasoning, volcanic and meteor impact glass had been long used as gem stones.  What happened was Hero (or Heron) of Alexandria studied the areas where these gems were found (he designed the first steam device, and rigged up a bunch of special effects for priests to prove the roman gods were still in power, not the christian one) and discovered that if you heated sand, you ended up with crude glass.

So, the theory had been around for sometime, the 'gems' were used in trade along the silk road, and then the chinese got ahold of them, and they figured out how to make opaque glass panes and net floats.

The Japanese took the process still further and developed the first practical windows, sometime around 500AD, from there it made its way back along the silk road to Europe in time for the dark ages to lose it, then find it again in time for the building of the great gothic cathedrals.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

I always wonder who figured out that dung from the civet, who lives in the jungles of Southeast Asia, makes a damn fine cup of coffee.

That was one of the cool things about the Sixties... Now what is there? The retarded youth of Suburbia wearing baggy pants and playing gangsta. Twats.

The consolation is that these things tend to go in cycles - and sooner or later one of said twats is going to get a cold bum and invent the belt - most likely when his shoulder holster inadvertently slips and he pulls it up and it catches his waist.

And before long, just as the dreadful disco era provoked the punk movement, there shall be pants pulled up and music of artistic merit across this great land once again.

And then we'll sell it to the US market and make another fortune.

This really cheered me up. Real actual music again, played on real instruments! From Liverpool!

I have often wondered the same thing...like who first thought of sticking meat into a fire rather than eat it raw, etc.
In addition to that, I wonder who the character was that dug up that first potato and wondered if it he threw it in the fire too, if it would go good with that cooked meat. (I'm not even going to speculate about how the sour cream got in this mix)

When I was a kid I read a book by Jim Kjelgaard called Fire-Hunter. Simple children's book with a simple premise, but the story has stuck in my mind ever since. What made it stick wasn't the writing, nor the characters, but rather the practical way he had of explaining the progression from a nomadic hunter-gatherer type of existence to what would have laid the groundwork for the first village. Actually I still have that book. I kept it to read to my own children. It's made it through a couple of them and has a couple more to go. Like I said, simple book with a simple premise but it certainly did stir the imagination.

There is no exact translation for fork but it is acceptable to use the following which announces 'sitting down to eat with fork in hand'

what a timely topic!

I am actually using urine I made to clean a plastic bucket that was used to hold paint.   Being that uric acid/pee is more acid then alcoli it seems to be working.  So now I am using it for 3 buckets.

With a huge house, and only one bathroom which is up the stairs to the back.... one doesnt always feel like walking 1/2 miles to pee.

So I have this brew out in the yard, I threw in some old coffee too.   lol...    the paint is coming off!  yay

Uh, the pH of urine ranges from 4.8 to 8.0. A 5% solution of acetic acid (vinegar) is around 2.4. This means that vinegar is well over 100 times more acidic than urine at least. At pH 8, it's around 500,000 times more acidic.

An exercise for the student:

The K(a) of acetic acid, is 1.75 x 10^-5.

The equilibrium condition is
    [H+][C2H3O2-]/[HC2H3O2]

calculate the pH of a 0.50 Molar soluion of vinegar
.
