In a defiant statement issued Monday, Warners said it was prepared to go to trial or to appeal last week's U.S. District Court ruling that the studio had infringed on Fox's copyright in making the adaptation of the Alan Moore superhero graphic novel.
Fox, meanwhile, is looking for an injunction against the March 6, 2009, release of the movie.

This is going to be an interesting battle I suspect.

[>:]  [sm=anger.gif]   [sm=angry.gif]   Oh very bad words indeed!!!! Dammit, this is the one movie we've been waiting to see for ages and ages and now they're going to court?!? We'd heard about the copyright infringement fight but this is getting ridiculous. It's all about the money - Fox has seen the interest in this project now and even though they dropped it many years ago, they just want the action for themselves now.

You Guys don't remember the X-Men Fiasco then do you?

It was a script in 1990 and it was faught and faught about with threats of Marvel and Other Companies Sueing ANY movie studio that picked it up. I heard at one point Glen Danzig who was asked to Test for Wolverine (If you think about it he would have been perfect he's like 5'4" and Hairy.) He recieved a Threat that said if he accepted the Part he needed to watch his back and all other stupid crap.

Movies are HUGE money and if the right people don't get it then stuff like this happens.

Anyone care to make any bets that a few days prior to the intended release, they'll come to some back room settlement so that the whiners get paid off?

BlackPhx -> RE: Fox will fight for "Watchmen" delay (1/1/2009 7:41:49 PM)

They will likely come to an agreement or if Warner Bros does release the film will pay a court ordered settlement on the "infringement". The interesting thing to find out and I suspect it will be a major contention in court is whether Fox's copyright distribution contract had an expiry date that had passed prior to the release date. They may be limited to, at best the agreed upon buyout price offered to Gordon, but, it may be found that they have brought suit against Warner Bros. erroneously when it is actually Gordon they should have filed against.  I will be interested in following this, I remember the lovely battle that ensued between White Wolf and Sony over Underworld http://www.gamewyrd.com/echoes/others_13.php though I have yet to see any results and the Underworld franchise is still going strong despite White Wolf claiming it was based on their world and books.

They'll just do what Time Warner and Viacom did this morning. Bitch about it right up until it's time for it to be released, then come to some sort of deal. Maybe even use the fight for publicity, not that it needs it, since it looks like Watchmen will be 2009's answer to Dark Knight only with a spring release.
