OK, there is motivation. And most good dominant people know how to find motivation in a bottom, sub, switch or slave. If a dominant person does not know how to (or does not care to) motivate someone, then I would tend to regard any action, whatsoever, (which would include a "howdy-do") abusive.
And then there is warmup. Any dominant person who has experience in the application of pain in play knows that one does not start with the thermonuclear when a light tap will get everyone in the mood. This is not to suggest that a cane is the ultimate tool for creation of pain. It just has a formidable reputation.
Frankly, in my experience, certain application of IcyHot in certain areas can be more painful than "Six of the Best." One should not build up the cane in one's mind to equal that of the removal of one's limb.
For me, the cane is all about heat, and the dissipation of same. Once applied (usually to the nether regions or thereabouts) with some force, I feel a rush of heat that passes up my spine and out the top of my head. As long as I can expel the heat through my head in sufficient time, I find myself able to -- nay eager to -- receive another stroke. People who know me know I enjoy a warmup prior to a caning and I am always very happy afterward.
Of course I am describing sensations as I perceive them. I also am describing my own experience and I know quite well that everyone is different. I have heard descriptions of how one feels as the cane is applied and I cannot remember anyone describing their experience as the same as mine.
My main point is that, assuming one is in the capable hands of someone with experience who enjoys warmup and knows how to read the responses of a bottom, submissive or slave (and who isn't an abuser), the cane is a wonderful tool for both. The end result is a series of very satisfying stripes which range from red marks to bruised, broken skin (depending on the cane used and the force of the blows) which are amusing for the top to gently stroke with the finger or something soft to watch the reaction of the stroke. And a good caning generally results in a lasting endorphin high that places me in a state where I should not drive, operate heavy machinery or make serious decisions for a number of hours.
If she is telling you that her favorite thing to do is to cane, you should find the result very enjoyable, indeed. She is telling you that she has some experience and that she intends to encourage you to expect a caning. And if it's her favorite thing to do, she will certainly wish to make it into one of yours, as well. Assuming she likes you, she has a lot of reasons to do that.
