No on the fairy tales - yes on the bodice ripper romance novels. When I started reading Kathleen Woodiwiss and Rebecca Brandewyne when I was in high school, it spoke to some deep dark corner of my soul....... being overpowered, taken and loved by a strong, dominant, loving man. swoon [sm=hearts.gif]

i love faery tales, and will confess to owning a few bodice rippers here and there[;)] i started writing my own at grade school age, and after finding the ancient little manuscripts,,, am beginning to think my interest in D/s started a lot earlier than i thought... funny stuff[:D]

how i loved fairy tales as a child. still do. the older ones, not the disney ones with the happy sappy ending. just yesterday i was thinking of the parallels between the little mermaid and slave girls. she gave up everything for her love so that he would be happy. we do sometimes unthinkable things to please our masters .i read many a bodice ripper and loved them as a teen. rosemary roger's sweet savage love. yum

So do fairy tales embed unreasonable expectations on a submissive as a child growing up or as an adult still cherishing such early memories in pleasing her (future) Master? "Unreasonable" means her Master could never live up to the fantasy in her. Or do fairy tales affirm the natural submissiveness hidden inside and allow such submissiveness to deepen and grow over time, with fairy tales as a sort of early validator of this hidden feeling inside, adjusting expectations along the way?

As a child i loved fairy tales because the ones that were read to me wrwe the ones with the happy endings. I don't think it had anything to do with me being submissive, i was already that. As a teen i read the bodice rippers and they spoke to me a lot more thang fairy tales. I admit as a teen that is mostly all i read. Just that thought of the strong yet gentle man taking me wow. Traditional fairy tales are completely unrelated to my submissive interests. The reason: traditional fairy tales have virtually no femdom/malesub aspect to them; they are almost exclusively oriented toward the female in distress / male hero scenario. Yes, there are the occasional evil witches and brave heroines, but nothing that appeals to my femdom/malesub desire. More contemporary fantasies have a little more variety, but even they are predominantly male dom / female sub.

I'm in agreement with this...the "romance" novels did it for me. Be he Pirate, Viking, American Indian, Shiek....the damsel kidnapped and taken. yummy!!!

Another vote "no" to the fairy tales, and "yes" to the bodice rippers. Fairy tales always seemed to have some kind of moral to them, and they were almost always a bit too sickeningly sweet for me. I've always been stubborn and sassy, and I just couldn't relate to Snow White or Cinderella; I'm just not that mousy (sorry...not meant to offend anyone else). But the bodice rippers...whew! In many of them, you had an independent, clever, sassy woman who was more than willing to let the strong, dominant male take over, both emotionally and physically. Yum-my!! <going off now to search for any romance novels I can find>

the hopeless romantic in me still sees my life as a faery tale, trials that challenge me heart and soul, unforgettable friendships, and unfailing love through it all... purrrrrrrrrrr. and i think my own faery tail is getting a little bigger, or my jeans are shrinking...

And yet another no to fairy tales for the most part and a resounding hell yes to good old bodice rippers. I'll go even further and state that while I believe they contributed to my interest in bdsm, they are only one small part of why I am as I am. I think all of what a person experiences in their life contributes to how they are wired, as well as how they react to those things; and I believe some things are inborn and it's the whole of all that that makes us as we are. My own opinion.

I always loved Aesop's Fables. I have read the fairytales of many cultures and I, too, prefer the more gritty versions. There is a more modern fairytale called "The Paperbag Princess" which every little girl should read. Check it out at a bookstore near you. lol

I loved all those stories and of course something spoke to me... but I found that I really liked turning the cards in them... he might try to be my knight or pirate or prince... ripping my shirt... but I was picturing a knight, pirate or prince I could rip shirts off of. Then in other stories... I was convinced I was the witch. But in real life... knights don't wear armor and pirates end up in jail and prince's... well they don't marry peon's and come looking for me with pretty shoes and jail my rotten family. No... no... instead I learn that the world is filled with the reality of trolls.. of them all.. that is the real one.. wtf??? hehe

I think i have to agree with the group, as much as i loved fairy tales as a little girl and now, it was the romance novels that did it for me. Even the tame ones like Harlequin use to make my skin tingle. I love that the women are strong in their own right. Ive even found a couple where the women are the Dommes of the story line and the men are the subs and found that those are just as thrilling.

The only "fairy tales" i've found in relation to BDSM are the ones online and in kink books - i.e. Story of O, Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty, etc. These are nice as far as play, but hold no weight in real life for me.

IF fairy tales were a source of validating submissiveness, then is the real world just "the reality of trolls"? My own answer: No.

i'm pretty sure most of my interest comes from 1980s cartoons like Dungeons and Dragons, Prince Valiant, Rainbow Brite, She-Ra, He-Man. i was looking at youtube to see some of the old episodes and there were quite a lot that had girls tied up or caught in nets...evil men leering at the helpless women who struggles and tried too fight against the restraints...wow, and suddenly i am horny, lol.
