janigrey -> Virginia Beach questions (1/3/2009 5:30:16 PM)

I used to use AOL travel message boards but they are freaking dead anymore -so this is the other collective brain trust of opinions that I frequently poll for advice or direction.    Thanks in advance.

I've been put in charge of finding a hotel for my Sister-in-Law's 50th birthday bash.   She wants to go to Virginia Beach or close by - for travel reasons.  We'll be traveling from the Somerset area of PA for the curious.    We would like something nice - but not celebrity priced.... but not econo-lodge.  So - I'm looking for your top three choices of hotels - (I'm hoping someone that either frequents the beach or a local could toss in their two cents worth).
If you have some other location - that would be great too - but I don't think it could be any farther south than NC.

Any help would be appreciated!

At VA the econo lodge is bad, but so is the Quality/Comfort/Days Inn. It's disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. My family and I have been quite a few times to VA Beach (<3 it there!) and so I know a few of the hotels...the last one we stayed at was brand new so we got a really discounted/free rate cause all we had to do was sit in on a shpeal about timeshares n shit, but it was worth it.

Wyndham's are great quality hotels. I haven't stayed in a hotel of theirs myself but I stayed with a friend in her dad's timeshare owned by them last year and it was wonderful. There are holiday inns, as well.

I'm sorry, I don't remember much else..it's been awhile and we started going when I was very little. I wish I could help more. =/

I use TripAdvisor.com to check out reviews from other travelers before making making my plans.

I second the trip advisor comment, while some places may or may not have a lot of reviews they can help give you some ideas.  A lot of the online booking places also let people post reviews now too so they can be a great source (although I've always gotten better deals on rooms when booking through the actual location and not one of the discount sites.)  Be sure to realize though, that some of the reviews listed on the sites can be very very old and that they might not be relevant to the current management.  I've stayed at some places with really terrible reviews in the past, but they were completely satisfactory while I was there.  Always anomalies to everything.

Yahoo's hotel guide also seems to have some reviews listed as well.

I have stayed at The Breakers Resort Inn.  Beautiful hotel, with a great view.  I checked the website, and its $55 for the first night, but you may have to call to find out what it is for how many additional nights/people staying.

The Ramada On The Beach is another good one that I had a great experience at.  I did a random configuration on the reseravtions part of the site.  5 adults, 3 rooms, 2 nights in the Double Deluxe (79.00) came out to 537.62

Have you thought of looking into renting a vacation home.  They often times rent them for long weekends off season.  And they are often large enough to accomodate large parties...

My thoughts exactly - I don't know when you're traveling, but you can get some great homes at the Jersey shore right on the beach off season - you could go to Atlantic City, Cape May - or stay in the house, enjoy the view and drink the weekend away.  [;)]
