I guess it depends on whether the IQ tests are graded on a curve or not.   If it is a fixed grading sytem, over time the average IQ would move away from 50%, and 100 is simply what the average was the day it was created.  Especially if the theory that dumb people have more kids is true.  Anyone see the movie "Idiotcracy"?  If the tests are normed (graded on a curve) you would always get an average of 100.

In theory IQ tests measure the ability of the brain to make connections and distinctions, not general knowledge.  And  factoring out language barriers (which are real and difficult to factor out) culture or technology would not impct an IQ test takers score.

Ah yes, the little people.  Everyone knows that all that runs through their heads is thoughts of eating, pooping and fucking.  So I've heard.

Aszhrae -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/4/2009 7:33:28 PM)

I think I would prefer to have plane worked on by certified aeronautics mechanic rather than an engineer. At least I would have the belief the mechanic knows what grease tastes like.
What did someone tell me once about the chain of command.
technician takes orders from the technologist
technologist takes orders from the jr.engineer (bachelor)
jr.engineer takes orders from the sr.engineer (masters)
sr.engineer screws up, everyone under him gets fired, beginning with the technician
sr.engineer accepts little responsibility as he gets transferred where he might or might not make the same screw up
then again, who rightly knows
I have met few engineers in the years laboring for Sir, there is not one engineer that I have ever met with callouses on his hands, unless they actually get dirty, they really are not worth speaking too

by the way samboct, I was talking about house construction, not aeronautics

Aszhrae -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/4/2009 7:36:44 PM)

You have been talking to Sir here, Aileen. Except the last part and you missed one. Eat, poop, sleep and bitch. Then again we all do that now don't we?
Its not like we are silicoids.

Some interesting stuff I ran across about IQs and genetic clustering
http://majorityrights.com/index.php/weblog/comments/iq_matters/
Note the Middle Eastern non-European Caucasian clustering median IQ of between 82 and 86. I wonder if the Palestinian inability to figure out that lobbing rockets at Israel is counterproductive correlates. [8D]  (NOTE: the cited site is a racist site, and I am opposed to their ideology)

Is the average IQ more meaningful than the median IQ? Simple example:
9 houses sell for 100K and one house sells for 1million. The average sales price is 190K. The median is 100K.

proudsub -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/4/2009 7:47:20 PM)

Different people have different interests and therefore have different thoughts.  I don't think it has much to do with intellect.  I do think intellect plays a roll in problem solving. I believe what is in most people's heads most of the time (besides sexual thoughts) is what it takes to get through the day, take care of their families and plan for the future. Right now i am preoccupied with wedding planning.

Personally, i have no idea what my IQ is, but i consider myself well educated (HS valedictorian, Stanford Dean's List and have an MS degree), but i seldom participate in debates or lively political discussions.  Most of the time i am more comfortable on the sidelines taking it all in, especially in a group.

Aszhrae -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/4/2009 7:48:02 PM)

if 9 houses sell for 100K each
and 1 house was sold for a million
depending on the resale taxation policy of the state or county
I would have purchased the 9 and rented them all out
within 5 or 6 years I would have made all my money back and already established some equity into the houses I owned
then purchase the house for a million or have my own house built for that price at probably 50-75% of the cost and still have 250K to furnish the place

Actually, most people with above average IQ gravitate toward those with similar Intellect.

Those with lower intellects gravitate to those with lower IQ.
I had to undergo both tests, Weschsler and Stanford-binet, and was pleasantly surprised to see a score of 193 on the first, and a 197 on the other.

Then my therapist informed me that she was not surprised, bipolar disorder seems to be prevalent in people with high IQ's and who are very creative.....  I was then informed that the frequency of bipolar disorder in the US Population is .0067%

What fun news.....

So you're almost as smart as Marilyn Vos-Savant, eh? That's waaaay-smarter than me. I'm only in the 140s.
Good on ya, mate. [sm=applause.gif][sm=applause.gif][sm=applause.gif][sm=applause.gif][sm=banana.gif][sm=banana.gif][sm=banana.gif][sm=banana.gif]

Bingo.

Based on a sample polling of typical subject matter/thread topics generated by LE, that's the intuitive sense that I picked up on.

And to address her query in that specific context ..... I would simply say that most folks are so dumbed-down by that ultra-passive medium that we all know as the television/corporate-media programming, that grasping the enormity of the situation at hand regards the geo-political situation and the beleaguered state of the economy, causes them to feel very weak and timid - So they simply retract back into their native comfort zones.

Oh....and I wouldn't call the initial post introducing the thread thread arrogant by any stretch of the word [:D]

I think, in general, that people's minds are filled with things that interest them and occupy their lives.

Knowledge isn't some gift you're born with;  it's something that's available to anyone who wants to pursue it.

If someone isn't knowledgeable about the things you and your friend prefer to discuss, perhaps they have no interest in those topics/issues etc.  I certainly wouldn't assume they aren't capable of gaining the insights or knowledge needed to engage in a particular conversation.  It's more likely that their time is better spent on things that have meaning to them.

Lordandmaster -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/4/2009 10:12:34 PM)

Yes, they're graded on a curve.  One monkey wrench, however, is that IQ's have been increasing over time, especially at the high end (so it's not a perfect bell curve).  This means that you have to be very careful about using old IQ tests.  They're constantly being reissued and recalibrated, with important consequences.  For example, when school systems use IQ tests to gauge gifted children, if the standards suddenly change because all of a sudden they adopted a new IQ test, that could have a serious impact on children's education.  It's not unheard-of for students with super-high IQ scores on old IQ tests to get no more than 110-130 on a newer test.

Now that's an interesting issue for discussion. Are they actually superior in an evolutionary sense, or has the modern world simply turned natural selection on its head? And of course, regardless of the answer, the long-term consequences are even more "interesting"... [8|]

There are no consequences. The allele frequencies in the gene pool are rather stable, in other words: in homeostasis. That means that there always will be a lot of bakers and only a couple of kings. Imagine that everyone would be a king: then nobody would have baked bread to eat. Kings are fairly useless, as only one per population is required. A tall ship needs only one captain to give the orders and lots of sailors to climb into the masts.

What's in my head, in short order....Gawd she's cute.  i wonder to whom i could propose a vehicle that can generate 5kw in electricity without a gasoline engine?  Is that her reai hair colour or did it come out of a bottle, and why do women have such a lovely way of moving their bottoms.  Kracivija dyevushka.  if i agree with her can i look at myself in the mirror, and if i disagree will i drive cette jolie jeune fille into a sulk, or a retreat?  if i offer to buy her a drink, and tell her that she is gorgeous, look concerned at the right time, and laugh in the right places, do ya think i could get her number?  Gawd, i hope the russians quit acting up before the government remembers what they taught me, and i hope that the economy gets straightened out before i have to go collecting for the widow of the unknown soldier.  Muy linda senorita, bellisima, oh goodness, i think she's looking for me to respond to what she just said...smile and nod.
Nothing going on here, at all.

Except that in the industrialized world, we no longer need as many bakers. We only need a couple of guys to keep the commercial bakery running. When much of the unskilled positions have been moved to nations with low labor costs linked to a low standard of living, there's less need for warm bodies... Yet the ever-increasing ranks of warm bodies are entitled (legally speaking) to support from a shrinking (proportionally) number of professionals.

atursvcMaam -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/5/2009 6:13:56 AM)

Yes, and when the professionals are no longer able to support the  masses, as there is always a carrying capacity,  the masses will turn on them, and the ultimate winner is the one who can bake the bread without the contraptions.  But she is still hot, don't you think?

RCdc -> RE: what's in their heads? (1/5/2009 11:13:37 AM)

Hello Lady E, hope you have a fab new year.
From your question/thoughts, my suggestion would be that maybe you are mixing up intellect and apathy?

Indeed?

Those guys have an inflated self-image. They are great, assuredly, but Creation is not about them, it is about the great mass of humanity that has produced them as advanced pseudopods. In any case, if those couple of guys think they can do without the great mass of humanity, then they have the opportunity to prove their case by moving themselves to the planet Mars.

According to economics 101 that means that wealth is exported abroad at the cost of the own population. (Not that I am opposed to that, as the consequence will be that the living standard in poor nations is increased, either there resulting in much higher labor costs, or in a tremendous stimulation of the population growth.)

It simply means that many professionals are too dumb to recognize and maximally exploit the labour potential of the unemployed.
