What I have noticed is an increasing number of dominant women listing a UK city (e.g. Manchester), but selecting Canada as the country.  I don't know whether they're pros (my guess is they are) because I don't both reading their full profiles.

No its because when you sign up for some reason it automatically clicks canada, dont have a clue why it happened to me too (apparently there is no such place as wiltshire in canada)

Back off LadyH & RIMa'am!  If Peon gets here, he's mine!  All Mine!  Dueling Floggers at 20 paces???

[:D]  Nah.  I'll share.  We can draw numbers to see who gets to go first.
Oh I wasn't thinking of using floggers at all. I have insertables I've never used yet.[8D] I'm okay with drawing numbers to see who goes first though. M

Jaz says

When we set up our account here we put the UK but kept getting mail from Canada. We found out pretty quickly that Canada is the default when you open your account from the UK

Is there some reason why pro- and tribute- dommes in the UK, especially, seem so often to masquerade as dominas looking for relationships? Or do such pro/tribute dommes actually imagine that a submale who's searching for a partner will 'change his mind' if a particular pro/tribute domme is somehow attractive enough?

If so, why would they think this? A submale is no more likely to give up the idea of a relationship in favour of going with a pro/tribute domme than a vanilla male is going to give up searching for a partner in favour of going with a prostitute, surely?

I guess for the same reasons that people who get my number from a Professional Domination advertisement call up to ask about being a personal submissive.

If you ever solve the mystery, let me in on it!

Oh. And actually, I've heard of Pro Dommes pretending to not be Pro, but getting clients off of various kinky social sites. Unethical, but it apparently works some of the time.

Personally I believe the UK has possibly one of the best BDSM scenes simply because of the choice and diversity we have.
In London we had 8 fairly large clubs (sadly two had to close down recently) the biggest of them being able to take 2000 fetishists. We have many more smaller clubs up and down the country that run monthly or bi-monthly and then we have four very good fetish markets with after parties. As well as that we have a munch in just about every large town and most certainly every city. In the UK you have to travel short distances to find a club or munch.
Between us we have visited a lot of these club and munches and each one has its own individual community.
Only one London club comes to mind that attracts a lot of pro Dommes but then its a femme Domme club so we can't really expect that pro Mistresses (who get in free) are not going to try to market there business.
Obviously you do get pro Mistresses turning up to try and ply some trade in most clubs but the majority are not pro or if they are they are out to enjoy themselves with a personal sub.

One of the large UK BDSM contact sites insists that you state if you are pro. They also run a forum for the pro Mistress and they are expected to use it.

I don't know the UK scene very well but what I do know is that I spend most of my time explaining to subs that it's not a game for me and that I will not do what they want even though they offer to pay me.
You get annoyed about women asking for money and I get annoyed about men offering me money lol.
I do wish some male subs could walk a mile in my shoes.
I'm looking for a real long term D/s BDSM relationship. Not to be used to help some man tick something else off his wants list.
I can't help what other women do.

I'm female, and fairly new to this scene, but the further on I go, the more I realize how much it takes for the dominant in a scene. Very exhasting from the looks of it.

RM,
She was mid-thirties. Yes, something else I hadn't thought of: she might well have been getting a kick purely from email interest. Or even just the offer of gifts/money. That sounds plausible - there was something about her that seemed new to the game. In particular, she didn't have a pic that looked remotely "dommy", like most do. God's sake, she was even smiling in her pic. That, in fact, was one reason I was drawn to her.

Darcy,
I only hope it's peculiar to my area. The thought of flitting back to London, say, seems an easy option after having seriously begun to consider jumping the Atlantic.
colouredin,
Yes, I think there might well be some who are into playing at being pro-domme. It's odd - yet, I can imagine they get takers, too.

Lady Hib, M and Ms S,
Stop teasing or I shall cry.

Tasha,
LOL! That cracks me up. Yes, I've seen those twenty-year-olds saying they're from Liverpool, Canada, or similar. God, you'd think a little research would be in order, wouldn't you? Another reason they're such a cinch to spot is because they never look at my profile first. I used to ask them, when I could be bothered, "What was it about my profile that prompted you to write to me?"

ALAstella,
Yes, your thoughts echo my own. I've wondered a lot about apathy, lack of realisation about one's desires (versus what I see in e.g. Americans) in the UK. I don't have anything, now, against pro-dommes. It has to be said, they do 'mop up' those subs who don't want more than an occasional buzz (or who can't go for more, because they're already in vanilla relationships, for instance).  And it may well be that there are lots out there who actually get a kick from being exploited.

It's only the pretence that bothers me. Well, I feel I'm getting better as the days go by at sorting the wheat from the chaff . . . .
