Road out front is about 20 girl paces away. In wet snow/ran boy is it loud, daily traffic is quite constant and heavy, night maybe 5 cars per minute (just enough to keep you awake). Then there is the neighbor who smokes her pot out front then 30 minutes of hacking up her lungs., again loud.

Without blocking sunlight, is there any way to soundproof a window?  Obviously without boarding it up and so it is still fire safe?

Any way that plexy glass can be applied but easily removable??

we had a window that wouldnt shut entirely.  and since it was a crank out window and part of a double set, we were looking at over $400 to replace them (large windows that would need reframing, new glass, the works).

i got  one of those kits with the clear plastic film, where you tape it up and shrink it with the hair dryer, and it made quite a bit of difference in not only heat loss, but also sound.  and we lived about 20 feet from a pretty busy road.  so its worth a shot, you would only pay about $10 for a kit. 

plexiglass you'd have to build a frame to keep it in place, and you would still be blocking the exit as far as a fire escape goes.

There are two possible methods to soundproofing a window:

purchasing a thin piece of plexiglass, some 1x2 and constructing a picture frame to fit snug within the sill of the window.

the other way, is a shudder for the exterior so that you may close it before bed.

I second Pixie's recommendation - a friend of ours just bought that plastic film stuff and it works great for not only insulation against air, but sound as well. It's much more peaceful to sit in their living room now. :)

Another method is heavier drapes. You know, the insulated kind that you could probably pick up at a second hand store for cheap, velcro along the edges so that you can secure the edges to the wall. I know you wanted to allow light in, but you will be sleeping with your eyelids closed.

I rent, can't add anything outdoors.  Plexy does sound dangerous.

will ask hardware people about it, didn't think that would work for sound though. wow. excellent, thanks. now I gotta buy a blowdryer too. aaak.

now if only I could sound proof the walls from screamin and then the moaning and Oh God Yeah baby makeup sex life would be purdy.

In the summer a window a/c set on low can produce some white noise.  Can't help you for winter.

I run a loud oscillating fan at full speed, 365 days a year when I sleep.  I can't sleep without one.  It's always kept the noise out for me, no matter where I've lived.

Best soundproofing available for your situation:

1/2 a box of roofing nails placed on the road about 3 blocks away from your house, each direction.

(You'll sleep like a baby...promise).

That works perfect for winter as well.

In less than an hour you'll be so damn cold you'll have a plane reservation for Phoenix.

Ha.  I was thinking more in line with hiring a sniper with a silencer.

lol, um great, bad enough there is a pothole in front that causes the occasional THWAP SPASH THUD.  All I need is 5000 of those.

Earplugs no, they are too hot and well 'pluggy', Earplugs are a hard limit.

Besides I wouldn't hear my phone or meyows at the back door.

Do have a fan right beside bed I haven't put away after summer, gonna use that till I get plastic stuff.

you buy a noise machine.  ten dollars at wally world, has a volume so you can set it as soft or loud as you want it, mine has i think 8 settings....white noise, waterfall, nature sounds, the ocean, a stream...cant remember the rest of them.

the only problem i have is the cell phone occasionally interferes with it and i get a weird electronic noise for a few seconds.

I can sleep through anything else normall, it is just the randomness of traffic that is disruptive.

Anything loud enough to cover the sound outside would only be equally disruptive enough so I wouldn't have my 'mother's ear' alertness and be able to detect the little things that you we hear and can differenciate between a creak of floors or something of actual importance.

white noise is ok, if you have no other things to worry about.
