Chicago Public Schools' cappuccino bill: $67,000

Such is the quality of the school system that Dear Leader's choice for Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, has been running.

Shudder to think what he'll do for school systems across the country (at least we can be certain students will learn the price of arugula).

Damn, cappuchino machines cost $2,230 a piece?  When I was a kid, the teachers had two old restaurant sized percolators for regular and decaf.  I think you can pick those up for less than $100.

Some schools have Cuppucino Machines for the students.

Example: Private school Frances Parker in Chicago.

That's even worse than putting cappuccino machines in the teacher lounges. Is this what passes for "modernizing" schools?

Why not just go whole hog and let Fourbucks put franchises in every school?

Or maybe that's not a bad idea...let the students practice being barristas, so at least they'd have a job skill (if not exactly an education)

Public education.....why does it always end up being a contradiction in terms?

Well it is a private school for kids from well off familys. Its not paid for through public taxes. Its paid for through tuitions. Been there for years. The students are all college bound.

I'm sure CL you are a member of your local school board making sure no money is ever wasted in your area.

You left out the part about the person who made the purchase being fired and the changes they made to see it does not happen again.

The only one where no one was fired was the grade changes, and it's not like students in sports don't get special treatment across the board in this country.  Hell when I lived in Wisconsin, football or hockey players in my school never attended class, they went to pratice and somehow passed with an A

Everyone else was fired or suspended without pay

Dam had to edit or my public education would have shown

All we got was a couple of Coke machines.   Now we did have a coffee shop in the student union when I went to college.

It's hard work fixing grades and not educating students, isn't it?

From the link posted -

"CPS spokesman Michael Vaughn said CPS plans to change its purchasing policy so that competitive bidding kicks in when a vendor accumulates $10,000 worth of orders, no matter how many schools are involved. One person was fired and disciplinary action is pending against three others, he said."

and

"At Carson Elementary, an overcrowded school in Gage Park where even neighborhood kids were restricted from enrolling, five lower- level employees got six relatives into the school by falsifying addresses. Sixty-nine students from outside the attendance area got in, but they didn't even bother to lie about their addresses. CPS had to spend as much as $252,000 to bus kids who live in the neighborhood to other schools, Sullivan said.

Vaughn said the employees involved have resigned, been fired or will be fired."

You know this why?
You can compare scores of those in chicago to anywhere and you will find the scores way better and the education better.

I would like to see where you get your info? I know many who have moved from other states so that there kids would get a better education anywhere in illinois.

By the way, they were purchased for a culinary program. Not for the teachers. So what conservative anti public slant are you trying to make and what do you have to offer thats better and how do you contribute to the betterment of education?

As one whos mother has been tirelessly working trying to improve grades as a remedial special ed teacher in spite of her being diagnosed with a teminal disease, I resent those remarks and they are a slap in the face to all those teachers who work their butts off to educate the students working long hours grading papers at home and staying late to help students. Caring about students educations even when sometimes the parents arent contributing to the education.

(Education begins at home. I have given books to neighbors for their children and had family members say,"what do we need these for"?)

the many late nights i work a week - i'm still involved 100% in my girls' education from field trips to fundraisers and school meetings. i'm tackiling 1st grade and 10th grade at the same time - with my oldest i have copies of her school schedule and all of her instructors' school/private email addresses.  the teachers have my email addresses.

i've seen parents during report card pick-up yelling at the teachers for the grades theirs got for the semester. last semester, a parent berated one teacher to tears because her son/daugher didn't get the desired grade from her class.  if my daughter deserved an C or D in a Geometry then i not only talk to the teacher but daughter to see what's the problem and how to raise that grade.

teachers have it tough these days than when i was in Chicago Public School system over 20yrs ago ...the problems they deal with on a daily basis don't compare to back then. from more students in a single parent/older generation home to gang/bullying violence and mental issues - they're not only teachers but surrogate moms/dads, counselors, therapists, etc.

sorry for the rant but i have a brother who's a teacher at a school where he tackles what they call "problem" students as a counselor/mentor - it's a lot to handle on a daily basis but he's changing lives in that school for the better.

Just a couple of things for y'all to blow off ......

For one in my family you weren't allowed to drink coffee even until mid to late teens.

For two, those sode machines wouldn't be there if nobody was putting money in, so simply charge for the cappucinos. If it doesn't make money, sell the machines. Might even teach something of the law of supply and demand.

When I was in HS, we had what was called the "L" room, where we could get sodas and snacks, and even smoke !

How's that for old ?

I have heard teachers say that 20 years ago their big behavior problems were students talking in class, chewing gum and breaking the dress code.  Nowadays, far too often the schools are acting as surrogate parents with not enough personnel support or financial backing.

I heard teachers say that when I was in school.  When I was in high school, I raised my hand and asked some questions of an older teacher.  My question was, "was that back in the good 'ol days when the police were standing outside the schools around here turning fire hoses and dogs on blacks that wanted an equal education?  You know them simpler times, back when Ike had to send the 82nd Airborne to our lovely state to force the school to allow blacks and protect them from lynchings?"

I got sent to the principal's office for being a "smart alleck."

CL...there are those that give teachers a bad name, and that is very sad, as they are few and far between. Most teachers that i have met are dedicated professionals who honestly care about their students.
