(I do not have any tattoos or piercings other than the basic ones in the ear lobes from age 12 or so.) As others have mentioned avoid getting a tat that is too specific unless it is for your parents or unmentionables, etc. And as with all other forms of "real estate" location is key. What may be a great idea at age 18 or 22 may become a big embarrassment at age 30 or 40.

You can do the laser removal or put another design on top of an older one. Or you can do a tat in invisible ink that only shows in black light. A few of my friends have those.

When my uncle was a young man a group of friends in the service same time as him talked each other into going for a tattoo, and then talked him into going first, then chickened out after his.

He told me one year I was visiting he regrets getting it and wishes he would never of gotten it.

Plus it's on the forarm, and he's over 70 now and he's all saggy and streached out and darkend in skin color due to years in the sun, and you can't hardly tell what it used to be any more.

Yep, and they don't shout individualism to me. Everyone from sorority girls to soccor moms to stock brokers have the damn things these days. It's common, and very few things bore me as much as someone wanting to show me their new "tat." Yawnsville and very lame; there is nothing spiritual, interesting, or cool about them. It's just self-mutilation, nothing more.

It's probably best to have the tattoo on the forearm, rather than on the upper arm. That way when you break up, you don't have to hack off the entire arm.

I love tattoos, and If I wasn't trying to get into the nursing program, I'd get a quarter sleeve, maybe 3/4. There's no way in hell I'd get a tramp stamp. I've done a few tattoos for friends, and an artist let me do the shading on a friends arm while I was in the army. Lots of fun.

It 'is' a little snotty to come out and say that tats are ugly though. ;)

Anyway, while I'd avoid getting someone's name or symbol on me, I would consider covering up the old tatttoo with a new one, or possibly getting it lasered off. The way my laser hair removal is going though.... I don't have much faith in that system.

Piercings and other body mods do it for me. Keep it in for a month, or 12 years... it's all good.

No, it's just my opinion, and one I didn't apply to everyone, just me. To be snotty I feel I would have to be saying something like, your tattoo is ugly or all women with tattoo's is ugly.

Expressing a personal opinion that applies to me and me alone, isn't snotty. I've seen far snottier replies around here than I think tats are ugly and I wouldn't want one.

Hmm, I currently have five tattoos (and one that I'm saving up for that will incorporate black-light portions, in addition to traditional inks) but they're all spiritual and religion-related for me.

One day I hope to have a mark of someone on me... but it wouldn't be a name, and it wouldn't incorporate any written language. Most likely it would be a drawing that they made, or an animal or something else that looks good. Something that I could live with, and that I'd still love on my body even if there was no (significant other) emotional attachment to it.

I've toyed with getting my mother's name or initials, or my entire family's but I'm not 100% comfortable with it or my current ideas/designs.

Like others have said... no names of anyone that I'm not blood-related to!

Tough call, but yep, the only 2 options are cover up or removal.
The important thing in this thread is the learing experience.

Actually the problem isn't Mine, I have three that I adore...

it seems to be happening to more and more submissives--tatooed or branded and the relationship ends-- and as always thank you so much for that intelligent insight.

Gel pens are nice. lol I used to drawl things on my body with gel pens. Don't use sharpie, they thend to bleed, and just get all feathery. Some really good pens can stay on for 3 or 4 days if you do it right! haha!

there are removal methods, they don't always work and can leave scarring. i'd have something done over it, my sister did and it looks very pretty.

I'm in a very similar position, and also undecided. Fortunately, we had decided on a fairly simple design, which can be converted into other things. It's a brand rather than a tattoo, and was done after we'd been together for almost 10 years.

The more depressed/angry/impaired I am, the more I think about defacing it. At calmer times I think I should leave it alone. Which, IMO, means that leaving it alone is (for me) the better decision, but not the one that will win out in the end. Ain't that always the way...

Last summer I had a wonderful henna tattoo from a lady at the local Renaissance Faire. I had her place it on my lower right leg on the outside. The design was done free hand and was exquisite. That was a great experience and the next step is a henna kit for practicing on myself and friends.

I also like the temporary tatts that look like sticker you apply with water and pressure before going to a show or party. Some of my girlfriends get "bling" for their breasts at the local lingere' boutique that is also temporary applied with a type of adhesive. (And now I cannot remember what these decorations are called exactly!)

I can relate. At first I just wanted to scrape the damned thing off my body. Now, months later, I am almost indifferent to it. In time I will probably change it to something more suitable to who I am now, but only when it feels right to do so. I don't want to change it for the sake of changing it, and ending up with something else I'm not thrilled with.

I will say this - it took me about a year to become comfortable with the idea of being permanently marked. Finally I came to the conclusion that if we ever ended, I wouldn't mind it on me because it would honor the man who helped turn my life around. In retrospect, that was naive thinking on my part. I am the one I should be honoring...I am the one who made the changes I needed to make. My relationship with him is over now and I have moved forward. Marks from the past don't really benefit me now. Maybe I'm somewhat cynical now, but it's not something I would ever want to do again, or agree to do again.
