I was watching Smokey and the Bandit tonight while on the phone with a friend.  She was poking fun at me for still having a CB in my truck.  I realize I am a bit of a hick, but I wonder how many people still have a CB.

I used to be a big radio buff.  I studied for the amateur radio exam when I was in high school, but I never took it.  I still know my morse code.  But the hobby was cost prohibitive at the time, so I just lost interest in it.  My first CB I found in my dad's garage when I was 16.  It was an old 23 channel motorola.  I took it and fixed it up.  I soon had all my friends getting one too.  Of course, this was before the days of wide spread cell phone use.  It's just something I felt I needed afterwards.  I love them when I am on the highway.  I know everything that's happening on the roads before I get there.  With the lack of interest, I just wonder how long it will be before the FCC reassigns those frequencies to some other purpose.  It's already happening with other bands.

I don't do any kind of road trips without putting mine in the car (well, ok, I drove across the state without it, but if I'm gonna be crossing state lines.. no way).  I started with a 23 ch. also... (I think I actually still have that dinosaur).  My favorite was the Galaxy DV44V..all tuned and peaked *droool*

That one got stolen though, so I'm back to using CObras

GT, don't get married, you are looking better and better every minute. CB radios ? That is so HAWT !

Actually if the word "still" wasn't in the title I would think maybe he meant chastity belt, but oh well.

Breaker one-nine, this here's the Terminator runnin east on the black road out of the dirty mistake, there are more bears here than in Yellowstone and they are taking pictures, and Slavey, what kinda ear you got on that thing, you are giving me twelve pounds. Do you have a nuclear reactor in your rig or what ?

On a serious note though, if shit really hits the fan it might come to the point where even cellphones don't work, but a CB will. I've had a few, and someday I might wish I had kept them.

My uncle in West Virginia had an old Galaxy base when I was a kid.  They are awesome; so I understand.  I have a Radio Shack bought Uniden.  You can actually get good deals on Ebay for better radios, I just haven't been inclined enough to buy one.  I even see CB radio shops on the interstates occasionally.  In November, I was coming back from Florida through Mississippi and saw one.  I wanted to stop, but I was in a hurry.

I've never had a CB, but I have a bunch of old QSL cards.

I'm not exactly sure what they are; I think CBers used to mail them to each other occasionally after they had talked on the radio. They were sort of like calling cards or something, and they resemble postcards.

I bought them at some little second hand shop and I was surprised at the pretty flagrant sexual innuendo that was almost ubiquitous on them (...I think they're from the 70's.)

Made me wonder what those CBers might have been up to back then.

Love the new pic, Jeptha :)

I've had Unidens.. I may still have one (would have to dig through my mom's basement to be sure).  As much as I loved the Galaxy, I have to say the good old Cobra 29s are workhorses..

Actually, I think my Mom has a small Uniden that she uses on her road trips.

I last had one in a 1977 Chrysler Cordoba. ("With Corinthian Leather!")
It was a Motorola I believe.

Popeye, you got to get you another.  You're living in the South now, hoss.  .  Seriously, it's the best damn traffic radio in the world.  It also works wonders for highway boredom on trips.

Greedy I'll do you one better.  My uncle Glen met his wife on the CB.  When I was a kid, he had a base CB in his basment.  He met his wife on the CB.  Her handle was, "Annie.",  as in little orphan Annie.  It wasn't her real name, but I still call her, "Annie."  We all do (yeah, me and my family are rednecks.).  But., it's cool that they met that way.  They have been married for 20 years now.  Now I am not looking for love on my CB, but I still love having it.  I like having contact with people on the road.  I like knowing what's going on, when I waiting in traffic.  Even with cell phones and satellite navigation, you can't beat local communication with people on the ground.

It's a used to have...but sometimes I wish I had one again, particularly on trips. I even was legit back then, still recall my call letters but I think my license certificate has long been a thing of the past, not even sure if the FCC even requires a license anymore. I think my last one "installed" one was a 40 channel Cobra with some fancy dancy powermic, in a 75 Chevy pickup. I had a portable walkie/talkie CB a few years ago for occasional use, but again I think that one just fell by the wayside after some time. BUT there very well might be some truth to having one in your survival kit as being a necessary item in case the cell phones don't work at some point in time, CBs don't count on an infrastructure. Oh well, "this is Scooter, we be gone, catch ya on the flip flop".

Cobra 29s should be the basic radio of choice. Decent price and they can be upgraded with echo, a connex board and other things. Add a nice antenna and a kicker and you can get out for miles. Galaxies are good for the sidebands but you can get the same power with a cheaper radio.

Nope, they don't require a license for the CB frequencies anymore.  It's a free for all, which has it's bad points.  I still stick to the old code.  I don't cuss on the radio, but I hear lots of folks that do.  I try not to talk over others, but that's hard to do too.   You have a lot of inconsiderate people on the air now a days.

That's exactly right.  The QSL card was a physical confirmation of a distance contact.  They were exchanged between two hams who had communicated.  There was kind of a "bragging rights" competition among them about who could make the most number of distant contacts.

Never had one in my car but I had an RCA 23 channel mobile with a 12VDC power supply and a Starduster on a mast on the side of the house where the old tv antenna used to be. I hot wired a Turner Super Sidekick mic onto it. 1978.
