Irony: the use of words to convey a meaning that is opposite of its literal meaning.

See also, scarcasm and satire

Is the art of recognizing and comprehending irony dead?

Did a memo get passed out, and I failed to receive a copy?

Is there a forum symbol that I am suppose to use to indicate irony? And if so, what is it?

I have walked away from so many threads shaking my head and saying, "They just didn't get it." And after all, if it has to be explained, it is no longer funny, it is no longer irony, the point is lost. I find that I just say to myself, "Never mind, forget about it." And wandering away from the thread.

Are my posts that full esoteric allusions?

I would not have thought so.

Is there anyone that still recognizes and "gets" irony? Or am I alone in this?

Oh where are you Jonathan Swift, with your Modest Proposal? GBS where have you gone? I would even settle for Tristan Tzara.

Good Morning to you all,

LaMalinche

The problem is that the use of irony is an art and so many who try to use it are not artists.

Complaining that "why didn't they get is" may indicate more about the speaker than those spoken about.

Some of it is also the medium in which irony is used. Here on the internet when thoughts and ideas fly so quickly, what is one person's irony can be another person's statement of fact. It all depends on the tone our little inner recorder plays it back to us. i've missed probably more than my share (ok..i'm also gullible..lol)..because i couldn't see the eyes, the smirk of the mouth, the hands.

just my nickle's worth...

Irony is a common type of humour here in Ireland and I love it when its clever, the problem online is that it can be lost as their is no inflection in a voice to hear.

miti loves irony as well and often smiles at the posts of LaMalinche...

perhaps an *irony warning* is in order?
