In a casual setting where someone I don't know makes a racist aside remark to me, I'd give him/her 'the stare' and ignore them. It's not up to me to police someone else's thoughts or words nor take them to task on them. I wouldn't choose them as partner either - that part of the study surprised me a bit.

The other thing is, what someone says in a private situation, i.e. between two people with no one else present, what does it matter ? So, it was a 'social study' to examine people in private situations, but is that fair ? What if the roles were reversed and it were a person of another race that was rude with a person from an other race, what would be the resultant comment, or is this a study to say only white caucasian are racist ? If it is not, then why show the analogy. I have come across what some would call racism before, words aimed at my skin colour, by others of a different skin colour, but I understand this as people, and people when in a majority tend to stick together, their fears they seek like minds to make themselves feel comfortable. I know, the white caucasian can show difference to the non white, but then I also know the non white can show difference to the white, I have experienced it myself, but the not at any time did I feel it a threat, nor dislike, just a difference. Now, in private if those people had said something perhaps racial towards me, then that is up to them, private is private, I need not know, as it is no business of mine to know what is said in private.

I just don't bother with such people anymore. They just prove to me how small and narrow-minded that they are as individuals and not worth knowing.

I know racism exists against black people (in the words of the study) from experience I know also that racism exists between many races It is shocking that we have no study data of an example where the ethnicity of the actors and students is reversed ,or indeed varied across other races. One ponders the motives ...... or worse , level of ignorance underlying this ! I have no doubt that this kind of lopsided study reinforces stereotyping of a certain kind (speaking from the point of view of having been violently assaulted by what was clearly a gang , on the basis of being a racist .......... said gang never set eyes on me before nor exchanged a word before the onslaught commenced . I do not wonder why they decided I must be a racist before they racially attacked me because that is clear to me ...... "because he looks like one" springs to mind)(mind you .... at least I never turned them into newts !) I mix with people from many varied backgrounds , cultures , religions , races and ranges of ability . For this reason , I believe I am entitled to state that this "study" does not illustrate the full spectrum of racism and discrimination , if it did ....it would be of some use as an educational tool . If this survey was paid for by taxpayers in Canada they should demand their money back. It's typical of what you find professors doing on college campus these days. To draw a conclusion that anyone who did not respond was racist is idiotic. I think the target person who said nothing did exactly the right thing...just ignore the nutcase who made the comment. Heck, in NY where I grew up you could get shot for giving someone a dirty look...why would you expect someone, particularly a female, to have a confrontation over a word? It's not exactly as if the "white" actor started to do physical harm......If it was my child in the chair I would tell them to just turn away and ignore the comment. It would be something totally different if the "actor" said something demeaning directly to the target. Than cracking a bottle over his/her head would be perfectly in order. In the "States" we just elected a black man as President. Does it mean racism is dead in America...I think not...it's part of humanity. In every corner of the earth there are people who are outright racist, outright bigots, anti-gay, anti-semitic, anti-catholic, outright anti-northerners, anti-southerners, anti-american, and and on and on.......it's just a fact of life. The "experts" noted on the video who commented on this study were also wrong in saying it was "a small study with big conclusions" I think it's really a small study by even smaller minds with a big agenda.

So it's ok if they say it in passing, but an issue if they say it directly? As someone who yelled at a guy I didn't know, who was making comments about some of the asian people at the grocery store under his breath last week, I call bullshit. I hope that being confronted by a random white girl while he picked out apples will make him reconsider the next time he decides to publicly be an asshole. It probably won't, but on the plus side he apologized then left, so I was happy. It's inappropriate, it's gross, and while this is kind of a shitty thing to say, I expect better from my fellow Canadians.
