Correctness is never silly!  I gaze down my snoot at all those wrongdoers and revel in my superiority!  REVEL, I tell you!!   [:D]

Okay, time for breakfast, I seem to be having blood sugar issues.

Look at it this way: why is it a Mistress and not a Master, with the negative connotations associated with the term mistress (example: the other woman or a kept woman)?

Who says it's not?

Master Fire

You know, I was thinking of you specifically when I added that.  ;)

It IS pronounced the same.  "Domme" is a made-up chatroom word.  Do you pronounce "femme" FemMAY?  You do not.  This has to be my biggest [sm=anger.gif]
thing, and it's all I can do to not correct it every time I hear it.

I am driven mad by those who use apostrophes to pluralize, as well
It sounds like fingernails to the chalkboard for me. This guy, from the south, INSISTED it was pronounced that way, and instead of threatening to kick him in the nuts, I asked him not to call again; because I could see a chokehold coming were he near me and having that discussion.

LadyHib, I am not however that bothered by folks misspellings, since I do plenty myself. Are goddessess supposed to be perfect spellers? [8D] M

LadyHibiscus -> RE: What's the submissive version of "Domme"? (1/10/2009 10:09:05 AM)

The apostrophe thing is not spelling, it is PUNCTUATION!   I am pretty mellow about misspelling in and of itself.  After teaching for years, I came to understand that it is a knack, and not everyone has it.  [:D]

Gee, LadyH, I thought it was Dommy, rhymes with Mommy.

I tend to call them femme subs, if I think the gender of the person I'm referring to might be in doubt or when I'm talking about the cuddly sexy deliciousness of femme subs in general. [:)]

Love the flaming/exploding graphic, that's great.

And no, actually I think you need to join (if you haven't already) the "People for the ethical treatment of pronouns" group on fetlife. Sounds like you'd fit right in.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: What's the submissive version of "Domme"? (1/10/2009 3:15:18 PM)

Nooooooooooooo not another fetlife group!!  I just trimmed back my list RADICALLY.

LH, you and me babe!  I feel as though there is a grater being applied to my ears when I hear dommay...UGH!

and, have you heard "dommie"?  that's almost better, but not.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: What's the submissive version of "Domme"? (1/10/2009 7:03:31 PM)

It't so good to be validated!  [:D]

MsLadySue -> RE: What's the submissive version of "Domme"? (1/10/2009 10:34:44 PM)

I vote we use Domina rather than Domme.

Anything is better than domme...but Domina sounds like a made-up word stemming from "dominatrix" (it probably is, who knows.)

I only use it in the context of my screen name here, without the smartass part it's meaningless to me. Anyone who actually tried to call me "Domina" anything in real life would get a swift kick to the nuts. Oh...wait... I think we covered that one already. Nevermind.

'Fraid not. Dominatrix is actually the "made up" word. Domina is Latin, a feminine noun meaning "the female owner of a slave or slaves". The masculine is "Dominus". When you make the noun into an active noun, "Dominator" is a person in the process of dominating someone, and a dominatrix is the female equivalent.

This being said, I use "domme" all the time. People had best not speak Latin to me unless it has personal meaning. [;)]

As to the label submissive; I say it's ours, so come up with another word for the boys instead of us. [;)]

Just curious...

If you go by Domme instead of Dom, because you are a female, then what do you refer to a female submissive or slave as? Don't they deserve a gender specific term too?
