Status: offline 		First off, I am NOT substituting this forum for actual medical advice as I have an appt. set up with my GI doctor on Monday. I have been having excruciating pain in my upper right side, around my rib cage, after I eat. Also somewhat radiates to my back and middle of my belly. I have also been very fatigued and shaky. Went to ER last night actually due to the pain. My liver enzymes and white cell count were elevated and some other things that sorry I cannot remember were also elevated, which led them to believe it might be gallbladder. I was given an ultrasound to look at my liver, gallbladder, and pancreas. I have also had a CT scan. When I experienced this pain before, approximately a month or so ago I was given a CT scan which showed a fatty liver and I was told at that time it was not that serious. The pain has only come back within the past three days and is much worse. This pain is bad enough to nearly double me over and puts me in tears. It usually subsides a little then becomes more like a dull ache.  They NEVER find anything wrong with my gallbladder on tests though. My questions are, if my gallbladder does not contain gall stones but is just inflamed could that be missed on ultrasound/CT? Also, could my fatty liver be causing the pain i am having? I am really worried about this. Since I know it will come up in questions, I am a Type 2 diabetic, have High blood pressure and high cholesterol. I am taking meds for all of these conditions and they have been under control lately. I have also been dieting and have lost quite a bit of weight which has helped with my diabetes significantlly.
I just want to get any advice you might have for me if you have suffered any of these symptoms or might have any new questions or information I need to ask my doctor to check out.

(I am not Gregory House....so)
but...... two things comes to mind ...
pancreatitis (but that should have come up on the Ultrasound)
and lactose intolerance (which is an easy fix)

Uhm...have you had a metabolic profile? If not...ask your doc

Status: offline 		As an EMT for 6 years plus several addition years in medical clinics, considering the details you've mentioned, I would really be thinking gallbladder. Ummmm, there's a saying used by paramedics, if you're interested, drop me a cmail, I won't repeat it here. I had mine out 10 years ago after being told it couldn't be my gallbladder. Yet when it was removed, the surgeon and staff were amazed at the abnormal size and diseased state of it. It had been bad for years.

Now mind you, I'm now currently dealing with a benign growth on my pancreas, located between my stomach and pancreas and it gives extremely similar symptoms as the gallbladder did..... But I'm not House either, nor Cameron for that matter. *winks*   Just someone who's dealt with both gallbladder and pancreas issues.

Status: offline 		are you on any meds that are sensitive to the liver?

I am suspicious of ALL meds these days.

I had my gall bladder out.  the ER waited till the last minute.  they told me not to force vomit.  (ie it is all in my head)  but that showed up in the ultrasound.  gang green had started,. 

lipitor was wrecking my liver.  They over prescribe that. I was on the line, not extreme high cholesterol.

Status: offline 		it sounds like the gallbladder to me as well, and the elevated white could could mean it is infected.

Status: offline 		they told me when taking out the gall bladder that I could have loose stool afterwords.  at that point, I did not care.  they waited until the last minute.  I was in for a week.  they pumped me with massive antibiotics.  I will never forget the nurse who prayed.  they make 3 holes go in laproscopically.  the hardest part is getting into the surgery. from there it is no problem.  my co mate in there joked that it was my last meal.  lol.  I had surgery before. it is not as bad as a hernia but a tad worse then a nerve decompression.

they were not able to do the surgery until they got the infection down.  these days I have no problems with it.    I think chugging 2 liters of diet pepse every day for 7 years did not help.

Status: offline 		I just had the galbladder removed. 3 smaller holes ( 2 on the side, 1 in the bellybutton hole)..and 1 slightly bigger just under the ribs..because I had stonehenge in my bladder.
They started in the afthernoon and in the morning I was home :D
Recovering 14 days if you do heavy work. Aftherwards I could drink all and eat all. Digestion takes soem to get normal again.

Ask painstiller and stomach protection...

Status: offline 		oo, good point.  On my last surgery there was no pain pills rx.  SO I phoned.  apparently they do this if they can get away with it.  so insist on a pain pill.  no point missing a buzz on this.

  I had complications and it wasn't quite so easy with me. It appears that my anatomy is a bit different from other peoples. Thank goodness for the painkillers, I wouldn't have lasted without them. However, my surgeon was very liberal with the darvocet, enough to keep me out of pain for months.

Status: offline 		I'm another one who's suspicious of the meds you're on.  Having had a similar reaction to what you're describing (fatty liver that showed up in an ultrasound, but nothing in the MRI and lots of pain) from some of the cholesterol lowering meds, that would actually be my first guess.  If the drugs are going to cause a problem- the liver is where it's going to show up in all likelihood.  Check the warnings on your meds- sounds to me like you may be having a side effect.

This is also where the legal industry has a pernicious effect on medicine.  Your doc may not want to tell you that the meds he/she prescribed are causing the problem- so you may want a second opinion.

Status: offline 		i had my gall bladder removed in 93 and have had bouts of similar pain. It turned out to be a ventral hernia - i had a work up done before hand and was told severe gastritis.  Ask about the possibility of a hernia - i hear hiatial hernias can cause the same symptoms as well.  Good luck

Status: offline 		Why do they always wait till the very last minute to remove the gall bladder when someone is having obvious symptoms? It is supposedly a pretty routine thing and does not seem like it should be any big deal.
Yes my meds are a BIG concern of mine as well. Been trying to research info about them on the net. Yes I actually do have a hernia, you can feel it. I was told it was just from being overweight. Have not been checked for hiatal hernia though and that is something i will definitely ask doc about.

If it is around your belly button and you have never had abdominal surgery before chances are its an umbulicus hernia. But if you can see it protruding out thats not good, it can rupture.  My doctor told me that i was having pain because when it pushed out too far it was pulling on my internal organs causing the symptoms like nausea and pain. i actually called him in a cold sweat from my job and he talked me through pushing it back in .  He did tell me that if my symptoms came back to go to the ER immediately as i may need emergency surgery.  Luckily i was able to wait the week out till my surgery.  If i never get that awful pain back i will know it was my hernia.  Hernia surgery is not that bad - small incision around the belly button, they insert a mesh, sew you back up and you go home same day. One week and you fell pretty good, six weeks and back to normal activity.

Velvetears, bless your heart girl for having to go through that. Mine is not protruding like that thankfully, but I have heard of that happening and worry about it. Do you/they know what caused yours to protrude like that?
Counting the hours till my doctors appointment on Monday. Was in horrible pain tonight after dinner cause Master wanted to go out to dinner, and we went to one of our fav restaurants. As usual I over did it   I have to develop stronger willpower. He is also trying to be more strict on me concerning my dining habits. I tend to eat mindlessly instead of watching my portions. He is not the micromanagement type but it is something I obviously need in this area. Anyway thanks for your input, sorry for rambling.

Routine..with a big risk. Especially when they do it through the small holes.
The old way...leading to a big scar on your belly..is more safe. The old way gives the surgeon a clear view on the bladder, but recovery takes longer.

Hospitals..give other operations priority above the glabladder. Other reasons I have heard is that insurance companies don't pay unless..it is really really needed to get it out. Propably meaning they give shit about your painlevel.

Overhere we just go to a docter and if he ask if I want to have it removed..I can go make an appointment and the insurrance allows it.

Mine was caused by a weakness in the wall due to prior abdominal surgery (the gall bladder removal in 93). Over the years it just separated more and more.  Lifting or any kind of strain would make it bulge some.  He said it was better to get it done sooner than later as the worse it got the harder it would be to fix it.  i am so glad i have had it done. i wasn't even able to go grocery shopping before the surgery it was getting so painful.  Even if a hernia protrudes a little i would be concerned.
