I do pay attention to the cone, unless I know the person from elsewhere, or if they are someone returning to the boards.  Look at Rainfire, for instance---though I am sure she de-coned herself within a day.  (that sounds rather pervy...)   Still, lots of posts is just...lots of posts!   Weren't we high posters accused of being Collarme Bullies in some (now pulled) thread?

Jewel, that is one amazing story.  Good folks attract other good folks!

That was something I pointed out to MisterP when I had him come on and read the response that Jewel made in the thread.  I can't explain why on the public board.  Please take My word on it.

To be honest, when I was thinking about the concept for this thread, I had something of a devious idea in mind.  The thought had occurred to Me to create a profile specifically for the purpose of illustrating the point.  I'm sure you already see where this is going.  New profile, little about the person behind it, no picture.  I didn't bother because I was pretty well convinced that My theory on the matter was probably correct.  Like I said in the original statement, I've responded that way due to not  being acquainted with the person who's made such a request.  Not necessarily people who are in My area, because I do that as a matter of course.

Being that I have been on here for a couple of years, there have been folks who have helped when clip is hoping to find other lifestyle people in the places he finds himself.  I have found him events in NV, CA, and TX.  Later down the road, the next stop will be KS.  Oddly enough, I think that's going to be a bigger challenge.

I don't place any value at all on "the cone" or any other symbol that's over there in it's place.  Here's why:  Just because someone is new to the boards or even to CM doesn't mean a thing.  They could be a wonderfully experienced person who simply had never heard of CM before or who never had any desire to post anything on the forums.  Everyone has to start somewhere so, when he/she does, they have "the cone."  So what?  That doesn't negate everything they know/are before coming here just because it shows they are brand-spankin'-new HERE.

I think we've all experienced new posters who have lots of knowledge and good sense and advice to share.  We've also experienced those with 20,000 posts where 19,500+ of them are in "Random Stupidity" and consist of giggling and tacklesmoochgroping their buddies.  No offense but whose to say that someone with 10 sensible posts isn't to be trusted as much as one of the latter group?  Moreso even perhaps.

Basically, the cone or whatever is over there has nothing to do with the character or wisdom of the person posting.  Using it as some king of gauge to the person's overall trustworthiness or dependability would be pretty foolhardy in my opinon........................luci

An interesting idea, asking on the boards for that kind of assistance.  Personally I have reservations about my subby wife in the hands of a Dom/Domme I do not already know and trust.  (Yes, I have trust issues, and an overactive imagination - one of my many burdens.)

If that weren't my mindset, I would like to be able to use such a network to find someone to push her envelope or to give her what she needs while we're apart.

The fact that my icon is (and probably will remain) a vanilla cone will no doubt be a barrier even if I were to do so, I expect.  Too bad I can't wear a kink tab (like a 'Ranger', 'Sapper', or 'Special Forces' tab) to prove my credentials :p

Namaste',

I'm kind of wondering if the difference really comes down to that silly little cone.

The cone wouldn't make a difference to me, but whether I had some familiarity with the person based on earlier conversations could.  A screenname I didn't recall who had apparently posted extensively on threads I hadn't read (or whose comments were instantly forgettable) would be as much of a blank slate as a cone.  However, someone whose name I recognized and associated with vague positive thoughts would merit more serious consideration.

well, currently i have a "vanilla cone", but it doesn't speak to my knowledge or yrs experience in the Life...it only gauges how long i have been a member here on CM (and/or the board). not all w/ "cones" are newbies, brash, or otherwise with this online "resource"; but i understand that people will lump everyone into a category b/c of the act of others.

i believe in all things we do, there has to be filtering and discernment in entertaining people and the "invitations"  or "searches" (whatever they be).

The cone doesn't mean so much, just like a series of paddles does not make you an experienced person (you might just be a post whore).  However, there are some frequent posters who's comments I value and I might be more inclined to respond to one of their requests.

For some reason, at some point, I quit paying any attention to the number of posts and that nonsense.

Reading the words on the screen is much more telling of the person than how often they type them. At least that's my take on the whole thing.

Having had someone who was close engage in a silly duplicitous creation of a false ID, I am somewhat more likely to pay attention to the amount of time of membership than some others may be (That, along with the name and the behavior patterns of the individual clued me in within a a day or 2 of the creation and it took just a couple more days to build further evidence and track the IP address).  I peripherally take notice of the number of posts but I am more interested in what the person has to say.  Neither length of membership or number of posts inherently matters one way or another in terms of the weight that I give what they have to say; there is beauty and wisdom in many places and I don't require a neat and tidy 'box'.
That having been said, folks who I recognize and who have a consistent history on-boards are folks whose opinions I am more likely to pay attention to, if they are folks that I have gained a level of respect for (Whether or not I typically agree with what they say).
As for the story tht Jewel shared, I will add to the other voices that have said, "Wow!"  It is always heartening when folks choose to live upto their best possible potentials.  :>

Points to that damn lil cone, lordy I hate vanilla, I demand chocolate chip mint next time!

Seriously, usually I am too busy playing OP in the Auction room to come here a lot and post, up until recently that is. I usually just sat back and enjoyed reading until one day one of those posts caught My eyes, and now y'all are stuck with me,

I think it's comparable to the choice of whether or not to help a stranger in any other context, in some ways, LP.  It's difficult to imagine myself in your, or Clip's, position.  For me, if there were a cone, little in the profile and no pic, these would not be good signs.  Something else - some manner of stating the request - would swing me one way or the other, I'd guess.  In the end, though, I know I'd have pangs of guilt at getting it wrong at times.  I'd love to be a Holmes who could "read" people from the tiniest clues that they give away . . .

I have a cone...... it does not make me a troll for I neither seek nor wish to be sought
Everyone at one point or another started out with a cone
A cone does not necessarily make the contributors posting any less valid or lack of cone make it any more valid
These boards are here for people unexperienced and experienced to share their opinions and ideas
Yes fakes and morons can create new names on CM...... then again so can an established chatter who simply wishes to express an opinion

Something I noticed is when you make a new posts the count gets updated in your old posts.  So maybe something you said in an old post will improve with age like wine and be better considered by people searching for old topics.

Having recently been a "cone" I can know what happes.  If you post something, that is a little controversial then you get hammered by some of the "Old-timers".  (LOL...that should start something)
But then again I can see where if you haven't been here a while you don't understand the pecking order and there is a pecking order even if you don't want to admit it.
I think this is true with everything in life....the FNG ( f....ing new guy) always gets shit on.  That is just life.

For me the cone would only be relevant to the context of the message sent to me by the person. I've received request to take on someone's visiting sub/slave, but frankly, in most cases i could easily determine it was actually someone I had previously turned down or ignored that was trying a new approach.

Over all it's more context of the poster's/emailer's messages that matters to me. Take me, I'm not new, just been away for a long time and couldn't get back on with old id, (long story changed pc different email addy, blah, blah, blah), so, now I've starting out here as a newbie. I wasn't ever a numbers person before, had less than a thousand post after more that 3-4 years on CM anyway. So, I expect that darn cone to stick around for some time. Especially since I don't have all that much to say since its pretty much all been said before.

I'll just sit here and observe, for the most part anyway. So many interesting new people around these parts.
