Asherdelampyr -> Careers (1/10/2009 12:40:52 PM)

So, I have been doing a lot of thinking and was looking for input... I am thinking about changing my career path, I kinda stumbled into computers and IT crap, and was thinking about going to school to try and become a PA or (heaven forfend) an actual Doctor... thoughts?

mc1234 -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 12:51:49 PM)

Follow your heart.  If it's something you'd like, go for it.  Start by taking some courses, see if it feels right. You may even like something else in the medical field - radiologist or physical therapist, or even nursing - an MD will take a long time!  But if medicine feels like the right path, there's always a need for qualified people!

Myself, I don't like blood, vomit or guts.... or really, sick people.  lol

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 12:52:17 PM)

thanks

What about EMT?

or Psych?

Or substance abuse counselor?

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 12:57:21 PM)

Another way to determine if medicine is the right path for you is to get a job in a medical setting.  That way you can see what it's really like & some hospitals have programs where they help you with school if you decide to further your education.  I worked in hospitals & other medical facilities for over 20 years & I discovered that I was happy being a clerical support type person & had no desire to be one of the ones in the trenches, so to speak.  I worked in Admitting & as a Ward Clerk (Unit Services Coordinator they call it now) & my favorite was Surgery Scheduling.  I would have loved to go into research, but raising my daughter took priority.

All I can say is, third year of medical school a guy is rushed in to the trauma center with a severed hand. He was actually a pretty decent guy who owned his on aircraft, but unfortunately that didn't make him a qualified mechanic. The man had accidentally stuck his hand into a moving propeller, and the gore was unbelievable. I know some people say blood and such don't bug them, but if you want to be a doctor you have to remember that this isn't the car wreck on the side of the road...YOU HAVE TO FIX THAT.

Personally, I'd buy Gray's Anatomy (not the show, a textbook) and start hacking away at the material. If you have no problems memorizing the systems than you should be good. Do not start with the head or the torso! Start with the legs I'd say, and take it section by section upwards. Don't study skeletal, than muscular, then circulatory as all these things play an important part TOGETHER and should be studied as such.

Anyway, that would be my advice. It's nice to give yourself a heads up on material before diving into something. Don't try to read Harrison's or anything silly that would be too complex. Just a warning, residency is the cruelest slavery on Earth.

EMT sounds good too
how does one get a jo in the field without education?

Lynnxz -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 1:27:02 PM)

Just find a local community college and sign up, most of them offer these courses..

LinnaeaBorealis -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 1:43:07 PM)

I just walked in & applied.  I'm talking about the scut work kinda jobs:  orderly, clerical, that sort of thing.  It's a good way to see it all up close & personal.  But I've gotten lots of jobs with no experience or education in the field.  Ya gotta baffle em with bullshit darlin!  [8|]

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 1:43:43 PM)

My only thought is this: have you reached your potential in your current career. Like you, I will change course at some point, but not until I've reached the extent of my capabilities.

Asherdelampyr -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 1:48:05 PM)

I havent, but I am honestly not sure that I want to
It is a matter of desire here. I could do great things in the IT field, there is no doubt of that, it is a matter of figuring out whether or not it is worth it to

When my mother got her EMT certification the classes were held at one of the local fire stations.  Her previous education was a GED.  They were trained in all kinds of things from emergency medical procedures to vehicle extrications using the jaws of life.  Try to talk to some EMT's before actually taking the course, though, unless you just want to take the course for your own good.  EMT's cover a lot of area including car wrecks, construction accidents, child abuse, and a lot more.  One guy I used to work with could handle all the blood, gore, and guts, but lost his cool one day at a child abuse scene.  He grabbed a holstered gun from one of the cops and almost blew away the girl's father because he was just standing there with a smirk on his face while the people were working on his daughter.   So you got to be able to handle a LOT of very stressful scenarios.

Call your local EMT force and ask.  Around here it's almost all voluntary.  I know high school kids who train with them for a few months, go on calls, learn basic medical stuff.  But I grew up in the city, and I know they were employed versus voluntary.

A very good friend of mine went back to college part-time when her youngest was in kindergarten for her associates in nursing and her youngest is now in 5th grade and the friend is working at the hospital 3 days/week 12 hour shifts, making about $30/hour, if not more.  She has her R.N.

Realistically, you can't.  You need to have your ticket from the state before any company will hire you to ride on a truck.  To get your EMT-Basic you're looking at anywhere between $500-$1000 for the class plus state exam fees.  To get your EMT-Intermediate, it's another $500 or so plus exam fees.  All for the pleasure of earning between $10-$15 an hour.

If you want to get your paramedic ticket, that's another full year of school and $5k or so AFTER working in the field as an EMT-B or above for a year and completing college level math, English, medical terminology, intro to anatomy and physiology courses.

Think long and hard before choosing this path.  If this isn't something you're driven to do, you'll get burned out, chewed up and spit out.  If you're still interested after all that, visit the website of Utah's Bureau of EMS and they list all the training locations in the state.

You've given limited information.

I don't know what your style is.

I don't know what your aversion to risk is.

I don't know what your dreams are.

You say you're into computers.  Take an ad out like Michael Dell did...build mail order computers.

(My PA years ago knew as much as much as my doctor did...I asked him "why aren't you a doctor?" he said...."because I make 65% as much as he does without the schooling".)

You already know what you want to do.

Do it.

everhope -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 7:25:24 PM)

i was going to say EMT's don't make much.
i will add though, Asher working in the medical field is rewarding as far as helping others goes. not a day goes by that i don't feel like i make a difference in someones life. i have a need to feel needed nursing does that for me. i like to make people feel better whether with a medication (when someone is in pain, you are an instant angel when you have the keys to the narcotics), listening or simply a warm touch. you do have to be ok with blood, shit and piss tho...oh yeah and oral secretions (those took me awhile).
becoming a PA is at least 6 years of education and you better be really strong in the sciences.

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Careers (1/10/2009 7:29:16 PM)

I am moving into my third career this year, if all goes according to plan~~I wish you all the best in your new venture, regardless of its form.
