I have trouble figuring out where to put my posts.  But I have found that When all else fails, Put it in Randon Stupidity!  lol

So anyways, I have been having a really hard time sleeping the past, oh, I don't know. 4 years or so... But lately, it has been really bad for me.  Between stress, worry, and the fact that I am addicted to CM, I just can't get to sleep until about the time the sun should be coming up.  If I do manage to pull myself away from the computer, I toss and turn and just stare at my ceiling all night (which I think is why I am on the computer so much in the first place.)  Now, if I didn't have to get up, wouldn't be a problem, But I have an UM, that gets me up fairly early.

I recently have been trying to diet, and try and become healthier. So I have been looking into natural alternatives for things.  I have been eating fresh food, and trying to stay away from things that just aren't good for you.  I went to the grocery store yesterday, and decided to buy some tea.  I love tea.  It has always helped me to kind of relax a bit.  Well, there are SOOOOOO many differant kinds.  But I found one for trying to help me to calm down.  It's chamomile and some other crap. lol But it's really good, and it really works.  I told a friend of mine about it today, and they said that since I am sensative to that kind of thing, that maybe I should try some aromatherapy.

So here is my question (sorry it took so long to get to it. Did I mention I have a hard time focusing too?? lol):
Does anyone know of places online that I might be able to find the things I need for an affordable price?  I have been searching, and really only found places that sell the great big bottles of oils for a large amout of cash.  I really only want something small to try it, and see if it works.  I don't have a whole lot of money to waste on the stuff if I'm not going to use it.

I am looking for pointers on any of this really.  Any help would be greatly apprichiated.  I have been told that I need to go to bed earlier.  The only thing that does for me is make me toss and turn longer.  Thank you all for your help in advance..

Heya Fannie,
i would recommend trying bath and body works. They have some decent aromatherapy products for inexpensive prices.....
Additionally, if you find a website online that has products you want, you can always try 'googling' the name of the site plus coupons.  i've saved a great deal of money that way....
Incidentally, i've also used melatonin in the past. It worked okay at that time.
Good sleeping,
Kali

If you check into some of your local health food stores many of them carry the small bottles of aromatic oils.  Also look in some of your craft stores and alternative pharmacies. Have you thought about trying melatonin?

What I was told about my insomnia.
Make bed somewhere just for sleep and sex. Do not read in bed, and if you cant sleep get back up.

I drink Valerian tea, and it helps pretty well, if you can manage the taste. It isnt great, but I dont see where it is all that bad either. I have not had any positive effects from aroma therapy for sleep issues, though it does help for relaxation. I am allergic to lavender scents, though, so that doesnt work nearly as well as necessary.

Id suggest a lavender sachet under or on your pillow, which supposedly works wonders assuming the emall doesnt bother you. They have them most places for under 10$, and its the same relaxation scent as anywhere else. Also, rather than looking into actual "aromatherapy" oils and the like, look at candles and such at stores like Walgreens. Some are called "relaxing" or "soothing" and they are the same thing. I get this from my doc, who told me not to bother with the good stuff unless i was sure it helped, and that the store bought kind was just as good for starters.

Hope that helps
DV

Thanks DV.  I really don't do anything in my bed but well, stare, and sleep.  (the sex is usually in HIS bed. lol)  I really can't stand lavendar if it's too strong.  I love the smell, but after so long, my nose itches, and I get a bit nausious.  So I need to have it mixed with something. which is why I was trying to get the whole aromatherapy stuff.  They say on these sights to mix the scents.  So I was going to try that.  Plus, they say that they can be used for massage oils when mixed with a base oil.  I love to give massages, and Sweets like to get them, so If I can use the stuff to help us to both relax, it would be a win/win.

I have very bad insomnia too - have my entire adult life, and it got especially bad once I had kids (my oldest is 16 - gak!).  I'm a natural night owl, which doesn't help when I have to get up in the mornings.

One thing that does work is melatonin - fairly inexpensive at the drugstore.  One pill when I'm heading for bed, giving myself at least 8 hours shut-eye and I'm usually asleep in an hour.  I do take Ambien on occasion - usually in one or two months spurts - the doc is very stingy wtih it because, obviously, it's a strong medication.  But if I get to the point where I'm sleeping only two or three hours a night, it can help get me back on course.

Bendryl/Tylenol PM and those other meds - I'm very sensitive to the ingredient and it tends to hyper me out unless I take one half of one pill, and sometimes that'll work.  It's iffy, though - sometimes even that is bad for me.

I agree with making the bedroom as inviting as possible.  I just made the bed with wonderful sheets and pillows today and can't wait to crawl in.

Sorry, I can't help with your original question on the aromatherapy.  The only outside thing that seems to help me is sleeping with a small oscillating fan next to the bed, or sometimes I'll pull out my ipod with my relaxation music on it.  I find the noise comforting.

mc, thank you for your post.

I am allergic to benadryl.  If I even touch the pills, I usually am being rushed to the hospital.  My throat closes up, and my face swells.  My UM had a rash when he was just a very wee one, and I couldn't even give it to him. I was too afraid that I would somehow get the liquid on me.  I think that I have become too overly sensative to the tylenol as weel, because it does the same thing to me.  I usually don't take any medication. I rarely take any kind of drugs.  I am too sensative to them all.  But that is with ANY drug.  I drank a cup of coffee this morning, and I was still "zipping" at 8pm.  I have to stay completely away from caffine.  I only drink coffee and such on Saturdays when the UM is with his dad for the weekend, and I know that I can stay up all night, and sleep in in the morning, or take a nap the next day from lack of sleep the night before.

I will have to look into that malatonin stuff since so many recomend it.  I have to do extensive research on things before I take them however.  I get mad side effects from a lot of medication.

The PM part of Tylenol PM is the active ingredient in Benadryl.

Hmmm... Never knew that.  Maybe that's why it used to work, but doesn't anymore... Maybe I outgrew the allergy... HAHA! Thanks.  I'm not going to chance it and take it still, but Now I feel like a bit of a stooge for saying about being allergic.  Maybe it's the dosage or something.  But I know I USED to be allergic to it when I was a kid.

(Feelin' like an idot. lol)

You might want to try ebay for essential oils that are reasonably priced.  I've gotten lavender oil on there cheaper than I can get it anywhere else. Lavender supposedly helps to calm and relax.

Quick story that might help you:   I first got turned on to lavender oil when I started going to my chiropractor about 12 yrs ago.  After the adjustment, she massages my back with it.  The combination of the smell, and the soft hypnotic music she has playing, and the massage itself, I came to associate the smell of lavender with the relaxation that I feel during the massage.  So if you get some of it (or some other scent that you like)  and have your man massage you with the oil, you might come to associate the scent with relaxation and calmness even when no massage is going on.  It kind of works that way for me.  Lavender is now like a trigger scent to me.  I'm not going to say it's enough to make me fall asleep, but whenever I catch a whiff it takes me right there to the state of mind I'm in when my chiro is working on me.

I keep it on my headboard.  I have this little ceramic angel with a cork in the back of it, it's very porous (sp?), so the scent comes through it.   I pour some of the oil in there about once a week, and it maintains the integrity of the scent.  If you put it on cotton or paper, the scent changes a bit after a couple of days.  A reed diffuser would probably work well too.

ETA:  I just looked at my bottle...The last place I bought it was www.meadowsweet.com.  I think they were on ebay ( it appears they aren't there anymore) but they have a huge selection of all types of aroma therapy products on their website.  Their essential oils are the real thing and good quality, not crappy blends and filler oils.

Try The Glasgow Method for Insomnia.

Take a blank sheet of white A4 sized paper. Writing in letters 3 inches high write the following list:

Jings

Gorbals

Help M'Boab

Crivvens

Och aye.

Sellotape it to the wall beside the bed.

Hit each word firmly with the centre of your forehead three times.

This should not only help you feel drowsy, but also help you to give a much better Glasgow Kiss.

Melatonin works......up to a point.  I got used to taking it.....i usually take 5-6 just to get a half nights (4 hours, if I'm lucky) sleep.  But I've got a fairly high tolerance to pills...I take 5-6 ibuprofen just to get rid of a headache.  I switch off from Ny-quil and melatonin and Benedryl to sleep.  I've been an insomniac from the womb!  I tried Rozerem (sp), which is non-narcotic and non-addictive, but the 30 day supply lasted about 16 days.....I was taking 2  8mg pills at a time, and waking up like clockwork 3 1/2 hours later.

I've used lavender candles in the past to relax, they seem to help, but not in keeping me asleep.  I can fall asleep, it's staying asleep that is the problem for me.  Ambien is supposed to be a narcotic sleep aid, that's why your doc is stingy.....he's avoiding you getting addicted.  Lunesta and Rozerem are both non-addictive, they say, but Rozerem did nothing for me once my body got used to the dosage.....at the end, even 2 pills didn't help.  And one side effect I've got from taking sleep aids of ANY kind is that they seem to give me Restless Leg Syndrome, although, one night I actually got it in my arms......OMG!!!! I thought I was going to go nutso!

Something no one's mentioned....go get a sleep study done......they are covered by insurance, at least your doc will have some info to work with.  I've been meaning to have one done, but I know why I wake up...I twitch in my sleep.  And white noise will help you relax, I have a fan the runs all night, I've used cd's of either a thunderstorm or ocean waves......just find out what works for you.  And the suggestion abaout bed ONLY being for sleep or sex.....that's a keeper too...get up when you can't sleep.....the subconscious is a powerful thing, and association is too.  I do read in bed, but that's in preparation for sleep.

I've tried just about every gimmick and remedy in the fight against my insomnia......right now, I play a few certain DVD's which helps me sleep, I read before going to sleep, whether I take meds or not, I am good for about 3 1/2 hours of sleep the first round, then 90 minute naps the rest of the night...I try not to get frustrated cuz that only makes it worse.  I've been so mad sometimes that I've woke the kittehs up because I can't STAND to see them sleeping so easily!  (Bad kitteh mommy!)

Good luck in finding something that works.....and pass it on if you find anything, 'k?

As long as you aren't lactose intolerant or have other problems with dairy products I know a lot of people that swear that drinking a glass of warm milk before going to bed will help.  I don't drink milk myself, so can't say first hand.

The melatonin does help a lot of people but didn't help me at all.

The one thing that most of the "experts" seem to agree on is to make a habit of going to bed at the same time every night so that your internal clock can adjust to it.

No suggestions other than the Melatonin, and following your thread carefully, because I'm a terrible insomniac as well, and without something to help me sleep, I'd probably fall asleep every 36hours or so.
I am a collarme addict, but the insomnia came first.   M

Soul, here's my advise to you, and it will sound EXTREMELY dumb, But buy yourself a bar of ivory soap (Has to be ivory. No dyes, or addatives I guess), leave it in the paper wrapper, and when you make your bed, put the bar of soap under the bottom sheet next to your feet.  I know. It sounds dumb.  But My dad and grandmother have the same problem. My dad wouldn't sleep more than an hour at a time, and he suffers from really bad cramps at night.  But they both did that, and swear that it works.  My grandmother thought that it was just mind over matter because one day, it stopped working.  That all the sudden, her leg twitches came back.  The next day, she went to make her bed, and found that the bar of soap had wriggled itsself loose, and fell off the bed.  Try it, and let me know if it works for you.  I would LOVE to find out that it does!!

White noise just make me irratated. lol

Me, too. I honestly can't sleep without the white noise and at least a slight breeze moving the air around.

As others have said, many/most health food stores sell small bottles of essential oils, and some have "kits" that include more than one. Prices vary depending on what oil you are after; some are cheap, others VERY expensive. To take the edge off of lavender, mix it with ginger or bergamot (ginger is more warm spice, bergamot is citrus smelling). Don't mix more than 2 or 3 essentials together, as you don't want too many different scents confuzzling things. A bit of lavender mix on your pillowcase may help you stay asleep.

As for massage oil, you don't need much essential oil in it, so don't overdo. Start with 1 drop per oz of carrier oil. Sweet almond oil makes a very nice carrier (base oil) for both massage and bath, and including several drops of liquid vitamin E (also sold at health food strores) will help keep the carrier from going rancid before it is used up. A warm scented oil bath may help you get ready for sleep, and the oil is good for the skin.

Happy aromathereaping!
