A personal Bucket List - 1/11/2009 12:30:08 PM

Status: offline 		I've decided that in a few months, once dad is gone, I'm going to take a long (and long overdue) vacation.  The probability at this point is that he won't survive long past the very beginning of March and the anniversary of mom's death.  We figure that's what he's basically "holding on" for, and once it's come and gone, he likely won't see another month if that long.
 
I've decided that at least Once before I die, I'd like to visit somewhere outside the continental US.  I've been thinking about it a lot this past few weeks, with mortality staring me in the face, and realized that there's far to much that I have yet to do that I've wanted to do - and if I do what dad did, make excuses to constantly put things off til "later" that frankly - chances are I'll end up dying before getting to do a lot of them.  I don't want to make that mistake, or face my Own death in the future full of regrets for what I shoulda/woulda/coulda done but didn't.  I guess you could call it my own version of the Bucket List.  A list that I'd currently like to make far shorter than it is right now.  I've already started working on getting a passport (something I've neglected over the years) now - so that I'm not in a rush later on this year for it to come in.
 
So - that being the case - I'd like to garner suggestions for a possible vacation spot outside the US.  What I ultimately want is someplace that I'm not going to have to worry (at least to much lol) about being a single female traveling alone.  Someplace without restrictive laws for women, obviously - which pretty well rules out anywhere in the middle east.  Where I can get a lot of "bang" for my buck - even with the dollar in serious decline on the world market.  Where English is a commonly Understood and Spoken language - even if it's not the country's Native language. 
 
I've been considering someplace in the Bahamas, but heck - I'll consider points of interest anywhere on the Globe.

I happen to know from a few years ago that at least Aruba and Costa Rica had very affordable exchange rates. Probably not as good now, but still should be pretty good. From what I hear you could just about live like royalty on about $700 a month. They are also weed friendly down there. Just don't pick any or try to leave the country with it.

Status: offline 		If you want to travel for an extended period I would highly recommend Baja. You can live out of a truck or van easily, the weather is mild even in winter, it is cheap, the locals are generally supportive, the scenery is gorgeous, fresh seafood daily, etc.

There is, in fact, an entire mass migration to Baja in the winter months by all sorts of folks living in more northern climes. You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a British Columbian carpenter. Not exactly an ex-pat population, just lots of gringos in the winter.

Status: offline 		I'm not sure what your budget is but have you thought abut taking the train round Europe (interrail) in 6 weeks you can absorb history in London - and check out the great fetish clubs, drink champagne and simply watch the people in Paris, walk in the footsteps of the Romans in Rome, swim naked in the blue waters off Capri, move from the amazing sights of Athens to the quiet islands in Greece, eat chocolate cake to die for in Vienna, check out the wild fetish scene and clubs in Berlin and wander the bridges of Prague.

Almost every one speaks English and don't believe your follow countrymen who say we hate the Americans - the Europeans sneer at flabby butts on bus trips but love the independents travellers.

Go for it.

With respect to all the people recomending beaches, you have wonderful beaches in the States. Do something wilder.

And scotland for the beauty of it all. Indeed even though I live here I have always wanted to do a tour of the UK we have some amazing history and culture over here and in such a small place that it makes is feasable to do.

Ohh I can speak a bit of welsh its a really interesting language, you should also look up the meaning behind the national anthum its really really moving.

Good luck with the Welsh Greedy! 30 years later and I have bare bones gaelic - but languages are not one of my (many) talents.

Status: offline 		I used to work in an irish bar so I am well veresed in your language (yeah its not an accent i swear) i used to have to translate some of my friends when they were trying to chat up women in bars :P

              I would suggest that you spend sometime looking around on the internet and pick the place that interests you the most. You know best what your likes and dislikes are, what your budget is and what you want to get out of your trip.

Status: offline 		Blame that on Irish mothers colouredin. They totally feck up their sons communication skills with "foreign women" as Irish women are the only good, child bearing, suffering gals that make good marraige material (and submissive daughter in laws) :-)
