CatdeMedici -> SAM-e (1/11/2009 2:53:11 PM)

Not sure if this is the place for this--(and yes I have done lots of online research)--has anyone had personal experience with SAM-e for mild depression?

I tried it for about two months. Unfortunately it's never done anything for me. I find most herbal remedies don't do much for me that I've ever noticed.

And prescribed meds just seem to make me sick as a dog or cause severe side effects so instead my remedy for depression is sleep, keeping healthy, getting out, forcing myself to be around friends and family, exercise, sunlight and spirituality.

I would say as long as you aren't on any kind of other meds and don't have any allergies to the supplement then try it and see if it works for you.

If you're feeling more than mildly depressed though I would say speak with a physician.

A friend of mine tried SAM-e and said it didn't help her at all.

You might also try St. John's Wort, but I don't know how effective it is, either.

You might want to try vitamin D-3 1000 IU, took care of the mild depression I had experienced. After having bloodwork done and finding out I didn't have any vitamin D in my system, I was given a massive dose to start it up, and now I take this once a day and haven't been bothered with a down day since.  Oh and when I went through menopause I used Black Cohash, took care of a few things, turned out menopause was walk in the park.
Have a good one

my oldest used it to help deal with the side effects of chemo as well helps with liver functions. She found it worked great.

Have not tried SAM-e, but 5-HTP worked for a friend and myself.  My accupuncturist recommended that.  Other herbals include blue vervain with passion flower, and organic valerian from a reliable source, as strengths vary.  St Johns Wort can make some people light sensitive.
Different people respond to different herbs and drugs, and different dosages.  Some herbals act almost immediately, and others take from one to three weeks for full efficacy.  Therapy is also an excellent tool for getting through some of lifes challenges, on a limited basis.  If the depression goes on past a reasonable amount of time, physical causes should be looked at, as one poster noted the lack of Vitamin D was the cause of hir depression.
Best of luck.
