Lordandmaster -> Jimmy Johnson & Barry Switzer (1/12/2009 6:59:47 AM)
With all the BCS talk, and the Oklahoma talk, and the NFL talk, I got to wondering: how many head coaches other than Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer have ever won a championship both in college and in the NFL? I can't think of any, but my football memory doesn't go way way way back.

Those are the only 2 to do so,

Well that's one hell of an accomplishment then. Barry Switzer is always caricatured as an Oklahoma yahoo (though he's actually from Arkansas), but winning three college championships and then a Super Bowl is awfully impressive.

Barry is held as something of an Icon here in Oklahoma - and there's perinnial rumor that he's been nominated for sainthood. The fact that he managed to take OU teams to such heights was his first miracle.
I'm an OU alumnus - and I Hate football. I didn't used to hate football. I didn't understand it, but I didn't Hate it. And then I went to OU - where, during the early 90s while I was there, football players didn't have to actually pass a class in order to Pass a class. "Duh - Football! You Bet!" seemed to be the most intelligent sentence any of them were capable of stringing together. I learned to hate football players, and football.

Yes, the marriage of universities and big-time athletics is nauseating (hey, wasn't Merc telling us recently that universities aren't in "the real world"?), but I try to separate my love of the game from my revulsion of the college football system.
